Are gas caps generic?? I need to get a locking gas cap for my C5. Do I need to get it from a vette parts supplier?

Thanks!!

Well, I'm in Houston where there is currently a shortage of gasoline and it wouldn't take much for someone to pry the gas door open.........or am I missing something here.......

Well, by the time they wreck your gas door to get in and then find a locked cap they'll probably tear the hell out of it.

Man, why do people always like to wander from the original question. The guy just wants to know if there is a locking gas cap that works. Geez, he doesn't want to know your opinion of why he doesn't need one.

I for one, am also looking to get one. I'm going to get a LeMans style gas lid (Breathless) and it doesn't have a locking mechanism. There are a lot of haters out there, and don't need some yahoo putting sugar or sand in my gas tank.

he didnt say anything about sugar, just about people stealing his gas. So I was traying to save him the hassel of looking for something he might not need. If he has an anti-syphin tank tube, then he wouldnt need a locking vap, if all he is worried about it people stealing gas.

Geez

here is my two cents... one time... I tried to siphon gasoline out of my C5... I have a real neat way to do it too... thin clear hose and a pump that draws out the fuel at 5 gallons per min.

For the life of me, I couldnt event get the hose to the point where it would pick up any fuel with a full tank. So in conclusion... even if they did break the fuel door and pry off the locking cap... they would not be able to get fuel out of your car anyway..

Despite any "safety-theft deterant" features designed into the neck of the C5 fuel system: Most of the major mail order Corvette speciaty parts warehouses mentioned above, do sell a locking gas cap with two keys for extra peace of mind. Cheers.

I did a google with no luck. I don't think that a special one is required.

If a thief has gone to the trouble of breaking into you gas door a locking cap is only going to **** him off more. One , he's not going to get any gas and the more you try to stop him the more damage your car is going to sustain. We are neighbors, give me your location and I will make regular rounds and shoot anyone messing with your car, no charge...My daughter lives in the Woodlands, I stayed there for Rita, I live in a trailer park,we havent had any type of crime there in 6 years.A month ago theives broke into my son in laws truck and stole half of the DVD player[dumbasses]Friday morning they were about to steal something from my exes Altima when I pulled up.Last seen running in knee deep mud down the drainage ditch, I fired six shots above their heads, just enough to make them take cover in the muck.My messed up knee kept me from giving chase. Surgery is scheduled tomorrow at 7:30 am at Tomball Hospital.

IMO, this is one of those urban legends that is far from being true. "If blah blah wanted to get in your car, then a battleship, cannon, electrical fence or blah blah wouldn't stop them".

YES, if their intention was to steal gas, then a lock on the gas cap WILL most likely deter them from further getting into the tank. If there was a $10,000,000 diamond in your gas tank, then of course it wouldn't deter them.

Furthermore, if you have damage to your fuel lid area, then that is a good red flag to indicate that your fuel has been tampered. That will allow you to have it investigated further before you ruin your engine in case the tank was contaminated w/ foreign substance such as sand or sugar, or feces, or who knows what.

Sometimes, you gotta think outside the box and break away from the "bad analogy" and "urban legends" that gets repeated way too often w/ out thought or merit
