I am looking at a 99 coupe that is very low mileage and beautiful in all ways except one. The front fenders on both the driver and passenger side have a slight gap of about .500 inch on the lower section where they meet the doors. The area in question is the lower protion behind the fender vent. I would expect the alignment to be flush to the door from top to bottom. The car dose not appear to have any accident damage (no signs of repaint or frame damage) and clean Carfax supports this (of course I know a clean Carfax is no guarantee).
Question: How do the fronts fenders attach and are there any adjustments that can be made to clean up this gap?
Thanks for any input. Tom
There is a teeny bit of play if you undo all the bolts but the position is really determined by the wheel house (inner fender liner) which is glued to the frame. If this is out of position then the fender will also be out of position. It is a royal pain in the *** to get this correct. Most body shops won't get it right either cause it takes alot of trial and error.
There is only one other bolt on the rear of the fender, accessable if you remove the inner fender access panel. It's close to the top, but as stated by ericwong it is fairly difficult to get the bottom pulled in. My experience on those issues is usally a broken tab at the bottom from incorrect jacking.
Soon as i adjusted the front perfect the *** end goes down. Then i adjust the back to line up properly with the fender then the hood doesn't close. The brackets for the hood are all the way up. So now i have fender shims from the front to the back. I have it perfect except where the end meets up to the door. It has a half inch difference. Does anyone know who could fix this and deals with corvettes all the time.
My passenger fender does not line up very well on the top. It's one thing that has always bothered me about my car. There is very little adjustment and even if I did get the top correct the bottom would be out. I just live with it. Poor quality from GM IMO.
