Column Lock Just Not Working

What has happened is you started the car, the lock physically retracted, but for some reason the BCM didn't get the feedback signal indicating the lock was retracted. This leaves the BCM in sort of a confused state, not knowing if the column is locked or unlocked, and thus throws the "service column lock" message at startup.
In this state, the BCM will no longer attempt to lock or unlock the actuator, so if it's stuck in the unlocked position, it is safe to drive this way.
You can fix it by either pulling fuse #25 in the pass. footwell fusebox for a couple minutes, then reinserting it, or disconnect the battery for a couple minutes. Either method will reset the BCM, and it should go back to normal...The lock with start working again, and no more service message.

It is the computer that controls most everything on the car other than the engine/drivetrain (which are handled by the PCM - Powertrain Control Module).
The BCM is the big silver box located next to the passenger footwell fuse panel.
