Default clunk, then stopped moving..HELP

I have posted this in the tech section also with no replies yet, so I thought I would post the same thing in here:

HELP!!! Last night on the way home, I stopped at a pharmacy. I have a 2000 vert A4. When I got in, I started it, put it in reverse, moved about a foot and stopped. At first I thought I hit something, but nothing there, so I let my foot off of the brake and.....nothing! I putit in drive and it moved a little but made a clunk. put it in reverse and nothing, so back in drive and it moved fine. so tried reverse again and it moved backwards. I could hear a little bit of a clunk for the first foot or so, then no stange sounds. I got home and tried reverse numerous time, as well as this morning to get to work and everything seemed OK. I have owned a 1978 for 8 years (still have it) but have owned this car for only 2 months. It had 38,000 miles on it when I bought it. I did notice something else 2 weeks ago. While at a 4-way stop sign, while creeping ahead, twice it felt like some one tapped me from behind...the car sort or jumped...so I do fear that something is not right in the bowels of my majestic steed, I have not called any mechanic of a stealership yet, thought I would come in here first. Comments??????

Just from past experience from my vehicles, something like this happened to me once. Result was I blew the rearend out of my vehicle. When it blew, I actually thought I had been rear ended. You may want to have it checked out soon, before something really tears up.
