As was seen on another thread, some had bought the OEM Z06 airbox which has a bigger opening. I started my own thread since I don't want to hijack the other thread. So far, I have the outlined pics and the cut airbox pic. I did not want to do the zip tie mod because the filter have absolutely no protection at all, so I somehow copied the OEM design but different, I don't want to be sued for copyright infringement. The fabricated cover pics is coming up and the finish project will be coming up probably tonight if everything works well. First I removed the air intake cover and outlined on where I'm going to be cutting
and here is the cut up pic
BTW, I lost one of the grommet so I have to buy one from the dealer, will pic up tomorrow.

When I modified my airbox cover one grommet came off with the air lid and the other stayed attached to the stud, it still might be on the stud, you might want to take a look there.
I just used a hole saw and put some bigs holes in it ,seems to work ok
Hmmmm. never thought about that.

Yeah, I looked at the studs, did not find it. Anyhow they're only about 2+ bucks. So it's not heavy on the wallet.
Finally got pics of the finish project.
This was the first plan, tried to put a flap and seal it with silicone sealant, but the flap was too high that it would not fit
so I decided to go with this instead. Use a mosquito screen, cut to shape.
BTW the hole size is 6 3/4 inch width and 3 1/3 inch height or depth or length. Use silicone sealant to attach the screen and applied weather stripping all around. total cost was $4.47 +tax for the screen. I already have the silicone sealant and the weather strip from old projects.
It's not the best look but when I install it, nobody is going to see this mod since it's hidden in the front and it won't show from the front even with the hood up. will post some pics with the hood up tomorrow post install. They say that I should gain at least 5-14 rwhp, don't know how reliable that is, but if that's true- I just saved myself a few hundred dollars from buying aftermarket air intake. I will still probably buy aftermarket CAI's just for looks. But in the meantime, I'm satisfied with this.

I don't understand what you mean by this statement. The filter has plenty of protection. Any other open air (cold air intake) has open air filters with no adverse affects. I did the 2 inch hole mod but after driving 5500 miles to California and back I noticed where the filter was getting most of its air from. The dirt on the filter was directly in the area of the holes. I removed the box and did the zip tie mod and the sotp feel was much better. I now know that I am taking full advantage of the kool blue filter I am using. And the filter is showing no signs of damage or whatever you may think can happen to the filter with the hood closed. I do however recommend a performance hood seal, I wouldn't remove the cover without it. Just my .02
Glad I don't own "stock" in Blackwing. I would bet that this will probably work just as well (flow all the air your LS1 can handle)with a K&N or similar filter in the now adapted box. I appreciate your ingenuity!

I will at some point purchase a BlackWing. The air flow through it is much better then stock. A zip tie mod is better then stock but not better then a BlackWing

Sorry for the confusion, but based on the pictures I saw is that zip tie mod is that the airbox/cover is/was totally removed from the engine bay. If this is the case, there is still a possiblity of water getting in even with the hood seal and getting the filters wet which in case is bad. . I know the hood seal protects the filter from getting wet from the front of the car, but like I said, there is still that possibility. By keeping the cover which I did and just cutting a part of it much like the OEM z06 cover and putting a screen and weather stripping around it, for me it was a step further in protecting the filter element. It's really up to the DIY'ers on what they want to do, for me this is what I'm comfortable with.
If I understand all you guys, the more you can open up that front lid, while maintaining some structural integrity, the closer you get to imitating the expensive, aftermarket kits?
Can you still run with the same factory filter or do you need to upgrade to a K&N?

Even the zip tie mod will not get near to the flow of a Blackwing or Stinger-R.
However, I appreciate the ingenuity and suggest you get a hood seal as soon as possible. One good deluge or washing and you will have a filter full of water.
