I posted this over in Car Care products but don't think it really classifies under detailing and waxing... So I'll post it over here too
Anyway, I've had my 2 pc. Bear Eradispeeds for about 6 months now and have about 2k miles on them. I pulled my wheels off last night to do some work and noticed that the slots and holes have brakedust buildup in them. I tried to wipe it out with a rag to no avail. I'm entering my car in a fun show on saturday and would really like them to sparkle without removing them from the car, sanding them, and painting them with either silver or clear piant... Any suggestions are appreciated!
I bought a small household steam cleaner from Target for like 60 bucks. One tank of water per side, depends on the build-up. It works great! No abraisives just water.
Do not paint them. As soon as you apply the breaks the paint will come off . They will look worse.
I was referring to only the slots and holes... I've read Evil-Twin's writeup about his process of basically stripping the rotors down and painting everything with high temp clear paint to keep them from rusting but I don't have the time to do this. Anyone know a way to get the buildup out of the slots and holes, like a certain cleaner or process?
CRC Brake Parts Cleaner in the red spray can (Pep Boys, AutoZone) works well for the initial cleaning. If you want to really make them bling paint the slots and dimples with some VHT high temp paint Follow this write up

I used a wire brush and scrubbed the hell out of mine to get the build-up out of the slotts and holes. It will remove the the build-up but you will probably want to use some brake parts cleaner to get them really looking sharp . Good Luck.
The wire brush will remove the zinc coating as well the brake dust, that's why I use the steam cleaner. When you get to the show an acid brush just to them touch-up.

I just finished detailing my car last week and what I did was take some fine steel wool and used it to clean out the slots and holes in my Eradispeeds. Made a world of difference.

Damn you Gary, why did you have to go and post that picture again... It makes me so jealous...
Anyway, I've heard that the Brake Parts cleaner will take off the powdercoating on my Z06 calipers... is this true?
P.S. Will the CRC cleaner or really fine steel wool take off the Zinc coating on the rotors?
What about a dremmel tool with the fine wire brush attachment
That's part of Evil-Twins protocol but I don't want to have to pull off the rotors and paint 'em haha. I'm going to just clean them up the best I can with some CRC and this winter I will pull them off and paint them. Thanks again for the responses!

Same with StuzVette...
...I used dremel bits with 2 shaped tips to sand out each hole then a steel wire brush on my drill to clean the slots...

Some 00 grit steel wool, found in the paint department of Home depot, and a paint stirring stick/..///
put the steel wool on the end of the rounded part of the stick...
run it up and down the slot, like trying to start a fire with a wooden stick... the slot will shine like crazy it takes about five minutes to do one rotor...thats for the slot... you need some 60 grit emery paper for the holes...and a dremel... you can do the holes "On the car in five minutes.. this will last a little while without coating them... but when you use a dremel with emery paper.. those holes will look like diamonds..you will also make the rotors stronger, because you are putting a radius on the holes, this will relieve heat stress at the hard angles of the holes...
Any process to remove the baked in brake dust will also remove any zinc coating that remains in the holes or slots...
you can use the steel wool on the outer edges of the rotor to remove rust also...
These front rotors have over 50,000 miles on them in this picture. They are the first set of two piece Baer Eradispeeds in the country. Car is sitting high because it just came down off jack stands.
