Default Misc Questions

Bought my first vette,(2002 Z06), and love it! So heres some rambling questions, any help would be appretiated. (1)Once car is jacked up where do you put the jackstands? On the frame or control arms? (2) What oil filter do guys perfer, I'm suprised how small it is! (3) My air filter housing looks stock, but the filter is wire mesh covered by foam, its very thin and looks like its in the stock location. Isn't the stock filter a paper element like all chevys? Its not a K&N, thats for sure! (4) Did Z06's come with a plug kit and small air compressor? If so where do you get them, or, whats do you replaced them with, any favorites. I'll think of more but thats it for know, thanks John

John,
Congrats and welcome to the family....

First off, I use a small piece of wood between my jack stands and the frame of the car when I raise my front and back end, use the frame, it look like a metal waffle mesh under the center of the front and back end.

Second, is your air box stock?? It sounds like a Vararam air filter.....are there two shafts that split and lead to the front vents in the nose?? if so that's a vararam intake, if not, you can just buy any airfilter at wally world or autozone for it. I use FRAM in mine.........oh wait, I used to use FRAM in mine before I got my vararam installed.

Good luck with it, this forum won't let you down.

1. I usually put the jack stands one on each side of the center aluminum support, not the control arms. For more stability you can put 1 jack stand on each of the rear lift point's (infront of rear tire, outside edge. You will see a oval hole in the frame, that is the lift point).
2. I use strictly K&N 1007.
3. Need a pic for a correct awnser but sounds like a Vararram.
4. All ZO6's came with a small air compressor and goo to seal small holes. I would not reccomend useing unless as a last resort. You can find one for sale on E-Bay every now and then or contact Gene at Fred Beans.

Default re

I was using mobil 1 filters before doing some research.
I was surprised, but Amsoil sdf32 is the best. this was due to its high flow with small filtering pores.
2nd baldwin
3rd mobil
kn had a higher flow rate than amsoil but its small filtering pore size was not as small as amsoil.
bottom line is they are all still very good filters. In the future I will be buying amsoil.

(1) Jack stands under frame only, control arms not designed for this type of support. There are a few spots on the frame that will work. One way is to use the tie down points which are on the side rails just behind the front wheel and just in front of the rear wheel where the little holes are. Some guys put jack pucs in those wholes to protect the frame. The other spot is to use a 2x6 or similar piece of wood under the front and rear subassembly crossmember pieces and put the jack stands at the edge of this (just inside where the control arms meet the frame)
(2) AMSOIL SDF Oil Filter
SDF32 is correct part number for the LS1, LS2 and LS6 motors.
AMSOIL Preferred Customer Program
(3) Stock is paper element. Sounds like you have some sort of aftermarket filter element. AMSOIL just came out with a total new type of filter for those who want improved performance over paper, but are leary of the oil wetted foam approach:
AMSOIL Ea Air Filter
C5/Z06 part is EaA83.
(4) Yes they did. If you keep your eye open, you may find one for sale here. Most autoparts stores sell similar kits these days. Walmart probably even carries one.

Congrats on the "new" car. The 02 Z06 was my first car as well. I've had a pretty good time with mine so far...

Congrats on the Z06. Yes, the car should have came with a compressor/plug kit - you can get them from Chevy but they are pretty expensive. Perhaps Gene at the Karshop has one at a decent price. Or, you can just get a nice compressor from an auto parts store/Wal-Mart and a plug kit.
