that engine bay is not a 550 mile bay. also, the closeup shot of wheel shows a bad cleaning job at the wheel weight. no 550 mile car would have that kind of dirt unless it was raced for those miles. smells, actually STINKS!
But both warranty claims were for replaced battery .This would be consistent with the seller's claim that the car sat undriven in a private collection. Also I don't think GM would honor a claim for two batteries on a car that old with 553 miles on the clock .It would be apparent that the car sat and the battery was allowed to go dead. His story just might be true.
Only way I would ever buy a car with unbelievable milage would be one with a paper trail to prove it. Lots of ways to change mileage. Of course a friend of mine has an 01 Z with only 1451 miles owned since new, so they do exist.
there ARE A FEW LEJIT REASONS FOR REPROGRAMMING MILEAGE: all the 97-98 c5's and the cars equiped w/ a non hud capable cluster that need a hud cluster would be an example, of course it is unethical to rollback mileage, and hopefully carfax would catch this
to answer the ?= the mileage is stored in the cluster on c5's
So the mileage is stored on the cluster but is there any chance it is also stored on the computer? Basically a way so GM can check it for warenty repairs?
Im worried mine was rolled back and carfax shows its legit but that doesnt give me peace of mind.
If it were stored on the computer it could easily be checked.
There is no way for an owner to confirm any mileage other than that shown in the display. A dealer may be able to, but cannot release this info...
Seriously guys...topics like this serve as information FAQ's to those interested in doing it. As such, let's just say that it odometer fraud does occur on our precious vettes, and we should all be careful when buying them used.
Let's not post the details about it all on a public forum...
several months ago, there was a black 2001 Z06 listed on ebay with 800 miles. the pics provided by the buyer basically showed a brand new car. someone on the forum did a carfax and the result was that the car had some minor repair history done at the dealer. problem was, the indicated mileage of the car when some of those repairs were done extended beyond 6000 miles.
someone also sent the owner an e-mail asking about this. owner replied that basically the car had too few miles for some of the repairs to be done under waraunty so the dealer fabricated the higher mileage to be able to get his car fixed at no cost to him.
i have been told that if you replace the gauge cluster, the computer still remembers the mileage. the mileage can be zeroed out but would require multiple computer replacements and/or serious dealer intervention. some say its easier than that.
i ask this not because i would ever want to do such a thing. i am asking so that buyers can be aware of the potential for this and consider it when buying a car. there certainly are cars that just dont add up to their indicated mileages.
my question is, can this be done easy enough to be a concern when buying a used C5? certainly, the ebay car proved its been done
It's as easy as performing a search on google. To be honest, anyone who can't find how to do this task simply doesn't have a clue on how to use a search engine.

ok, i will agree. i did get my questions answered though so thanks
I tried to get GM to replace or roll back the odometer in a 02 Extreme PU. The Dealer had put in the wrong gears, 410's instead of 342's. The odometer was off about 12 mph, and my son racked up an additional 20K miles. It didn't happen. The truck never ran right from the first repair at 26k. We didn't reallize the root cause of the problem until we discovered the BOM called out the wrong GM part Number. No wonder they could never calibrate the correct speed of the truck. I got Chevy Legal, the BBB, did everything in my power, but to no avail.

This has been a topic of discussion before and apparently could be something that is being done more than people would think and probably is. IF the dealer could find this info out then why couldn't they release this info?
Also since you have sold C5 clusters on Ebay and are able to have them reset, somebody is buying these and likely is being less than honest. I mean IF you had to buy a cluster because of a problem I would think a lot of people out there would opt for a lower mileage reading for resale value. Its a legitimate topic of discussion and maybe something GM should fix.

When I sold one of my old Mopar classics to a fellow in Virginia, he had in his multi-car garage, a brand new 91 ZR1 with only the miles on it (37) from driving it to his garage from the dealer. Still has the plastic on the seats.
Says his wife bought it for him on his birthday and he considers it an "investment opportunity" for him and has never driven it. I'm sure that Z06 could be one of those sorts of things, but that particular deal definitely has the smell of 3 day old fish left out in the sun.
