All of those were "kits". Very HIGH QUALITY kits though.
The only "real" Cobras you'll see are at the track in a vintage race or in someone's garage. "Real" Cobras are EXTREMLY rare and EXTREMELY valuable.
This is correct, fewer than 1000 (both 289s and 427s) were ever produced between 1963-67, and of these perhaps 500-600 remain. Original Shelby Cobra 427s typically sell for over $400K and some have gone over $1M, if they have a racing pedigree.
They actually didn't sell very well because they cost twice as much (around $7K) as Vettes of the era and had paper-thin aluminum bodies. The Cobra coupes won the World Championship over Ferrari in 1965.
Hey Foosh, I was one of those very few who had a 1964 289 back in 1965-68. I sold a full comp 60 vette fuelie to buy the 289, CSX2297, 3rd from last 64. I purchased it used from Mrs. Lew Spencer. Her husband was an SCCA racer with a Morgan and tested Carroll's Cobras at Riverside Raceway. She ran the Long Beach store for Carroll. I paid $4500.00 for it. I trashed it for 3 years and sold it for $4500.00. Best deal I ever made- ya,right.

Honored to make your acquaintaince Mike. Don't you wish you had that one back?
Is your ownership of CSX 2297 entered in the Shelby Registry? If not, I can help you get it entered. They're always interested in filling in the missing gaps on the ownership of original CSX cars.
I'm one of the organizers of the "OktCobrafest" event. We've enjoyed a couple of little cruises with the Corvette bunch in the past and I felt it was a natural to invite them along on this event. Everybody had a great time and a special thanks to Tom Carr and his wife Margo for hosting the BBQ at their home. Tom wants to do it again next year and I'll bet the turn out will be even greater. We've figured a way to park more cars around his house so we can open the event to more people.
When I bought my car I was asked by the dealer, California Cobra (Armond Caprio) if I could form a little group to get the BackDraft guys out once in awhile to go drive together...so I formed the BackDraft Owners Association (BOA). It's a snakey thing. It't turned out to be pretty cool...no dues, no bylaws, no meetings...just get together and drive the cars.
I look forward to meeting more Corvette owners at our Mission Valley 1st Sat meetings at Starbucks near the Ikea store on Friars Road. Thanks to all the Corvette guys that joined us for OktCobrafest.
Hey Foosh, If you have a way of checking the registry, you could also look for an owner in San Diego by the name of Kenny Englebrett, my spelling may be off there. He owned the car for at least 10 years that I know of, maybe longer. He is probably in the registry. I sold it to him in the fall of 67 or spring of 68. I purchased it in spring of 65. The Cobras were coming to the slaloms (autocrosses) in San Diego from LA. They were in the same class as the vettes and cleaned our clocks. I set fast time of day about 120 times after I bought the car. I wanted to go SCCS road racing, but no way could I use the Cobra, so I sold it. I was the second president Of COCSD in 1962-63. I think the 50th birthday is coming up for COCSD next year.

Steve - Great pics. You have to let me know the next time you make a run like this. I live in Escondido and when I saw the picture of the intersection heading out the 78 toward the Wild Animal Park I knew this was something local. Did you go out to Julian?

Just watch for a new thread around the first of Nov. in the Pacific Events forum for the next GTG.
Here's a story for you: I live about 2 miles North of this particular intersection. Your convoy had just passed my wife heading West on 78...probably 20 seconds before this picture was taken. She called me and said that she saw a bunch of 'Vette's and some that looked like Cobras, but wasn't sure because she's new to the whole 'intermingling' thing. She said she thought it was an omen...a sign that I'd hear from the guy selling the '99 I'm interested in.
As it turns out, I had heard from the guy not 10 minutes prior and was on the road to his house...bought my first C5 about 1 hour later.
Thank You Thank You Thank You for being on the road at that particular moment in time. It was YOU that pushed my hesitant wife over the ledge and was 100% convinced the purchase was a great idea after seeing you and calling me.
