Default Type Gas Used in C5

Thats right, I am that green to Corvettes. I am going to get my first one next weekend. After I pick it up I need to put gas in it to get home. Welp....does it take regular or do they take premium. I have to ask these things to learn, bare with me until I get up to speed.

I'll post straight from the 2002 Owner's Manual; cut and paste straight from the .pdf file. Having said that, I always use premium when it is available. No matter how high the gas prices get, using regular will only be a couple of bucks cheaper, so what's the point? I've had to use regular in a bind and did not notice any reduction in performance, but I wasn't at a track! Well, without any further chatter, here's what GM says about what fuel to use: Enjoy your new ride!

Fuel
Gasoline Octane
Use premium unleaded gasoline with a posted octane of
91 or higher for best performance. You may also use
middle grade or regular unleaded gasoline rated at 87
octane or higher, but your vehicle’s acceleration may be
slightly reduced. If the octane is less than 87, you may
get a heavy knocking noise when you drive. If it is bad
enough, it can damage your engine.

Unless I'm mistaken, the new C6 recommends "regular" gasoline. Might be an economy things like the skip shifting.

Before we get stuck in the "only the best is good enough for my baby rut", let's not forget that the "best" octane rating for any car is not the highest octane available, but the octane rating appropriate for that application. The two are rarely the same and that's certainly true for the C5.

You are likely correct. But I saw a writeup in Consumer Reports a month or two ago with four sports cars, one of them the C6, and it listed regular gasoline. Might've either been a misprint or a mistake on their part.

Then that mag is 100% wrong. My father has an '06 and it "requires" premium to run at full potential. Maybe they just stated that it could run on regular, which it can.

Premium (91 or higher octane) is recommended, but if need be it can run on lesser octane. All the facts are spelled out in the owners manual. Congrats on the new car.

A lot of C5's have problems with gas gauges going haywire showing erratic readings and being empty when half full. As well a lot of members report that fuel injector need to be replaced ( up to a $2K touch at the stealership)...
A lot of this is attributable to cheap gas... So in additon to octane pay attention to Brand.
Many advocate regular use of a gas additive like Chevron techron or
chemtool B-12 or BK 44....
Stick with high quality ( top tier gasoline) and you should have carefree motoring.
For companies that guarantee the best in quality gasoline see www.toptiergas.com

Twenty cents a gallon difference = about $3.60 per tank at most.

One tank a week = about $200 year.

I don't even want to think about what it would cost to buy and R&R 8 FI's.

Like the Fram guy used to say, "Pay me now, or pay me later".
