Why does an exhaust even need an x or y pipe? It allowes both sides of the exhaust to mix, and then split off again into two pipes. The old muscle cars had a better sound because it was 2 seperate pipes all the way back.

The C5 Covette will take on a motorboat sound without a X-Pipe!

When I go the bloomington gold show every year, the older C1 and C2 Corvettes don't have a motorboat sound, as far as I'm concerned. They just sound great, and no x or y pipe. If that sounds like a motorboat, I want the motorboat sound. Maybe I'll have my y pipe removed and weld up both sides.

I believe it has to do with exhaust pulses and performance. As one pulse passes, it pulles on the next pulse, which pulls on the next, and so on.. tends to even out the flow and actually improve it. NASCAR type technology. This is what I've read, anyway.

That is right. The x-pipe helps scavenge the exhaust.
