You remove the cover to your stock air box and hold the filter in with zip ties to seal it. Most also change out the paper filter to a high performance filter. Make sure you have a good seal and have secured the filter.

More favored by C5 LS1 owners because of the more restrictive air box, but some Z06 owner's also do this.

I did it on my '01 Z...Lowe's or Home Depot will have 48"x 3/8" ties in the plumbing section.
A K&N filter and the (10) to-a-pack zip ties (you only need two at a time so you'll need more ties in 100.000 miles) will run you no more than $65.00. For this you get a free flowing induction system MUCH better than the stock set-up (IMPO).
Now; you won't get any pressure induction like the Vararam, etc. (unless you were to take 2" pipe insulation and make baffles to seal the area forward of the radiator shroud/hood...

For what I do it was the best, cheapest solution. Plus I lay claim to the biggest damn airbox on a Z...

YMMV.

I did the mod on my 02 Z06. But I used Velcro safety straps to hold the filter in place. Without the cover that snaps into the posts the box doesn't sit still. So I used Velcro strips underneath to hold the airbox still. Also took some 3" flexible aluminum duct and fit it inside the nose from the Z06 breather/screens back to each side of the filter. Poor mans Cold Air idea that cost <$10 to do. May not look pretty but it works and is easy to revert back.

I just ordered a new cover and will be taking a dremmel to it and rigging it up so I can get more air and have the aluminum CA tubes connect on each side.

The only reason I want a cut up top. If you wash the car and don't have an hood seal then water will roll down onto the wide open air box and filter near the bottom. That would appear to be the reason that the cutout on the Z06 box is as low as they dared to make it. But they could have opened it up on the sides.
