I've had my '98 for only a few weeks, so I don't know what's "normal." My manual says the A/C light is on when the compressor is on. But in situations where you would not expect the A/C to be on (like when you're heating the car) the light is still on. In fact, it does not seem to go off unless I toggle it manually. Is this normal?
My '98 does the same thing. Anytime you hit "auto" the AC kicks on, even when using the heat. Sometimes when I try to turn it off, the light blinks. Makes me wish I had the old three dial setup sometimes!

My '98 does too! Maybe it is using the a/c to dehumidify the cabin, even when heating. Don't worry about it.
Something to worry about it the steering column locking...do your have a manual transmission? If you do, get the CLB ASAP...read sticky if you are unsure.

Perfectly normal. This is a climate control system which uses several sensors to help with heating, cooling, defrosting and humidity. The A/C is part of not only the cooilng system but also the defrosting system to control humidity inside the vehicle.
Your Corvette may be equipped with a Dual Zone
Electronic Climate Control System. This system can
automatically adjust and control temperature output, fan
speed, air delivery mode, air conditioning operation and
air intake. You can. use the AUTO (automatic) setting or
override the automatic operation with manual control
settings. The control settings will be remembered each
time you turn the ignition off and restart in the same
settings. You can use the Memory option to store and
recall your settings. (See “Memory” in the Index.)
A/C: This button turns the air conditioning
compressor on or off, except in the FRONT defrost mode.
The light on the A/C button will come on when the
compressor is operating in either the automaotric m anual
mode. The air conditioning may also be forced off at high
engine speeds. The light on the A/C button will flash
when pressed when air conditioning operation is not allowed.
The air conditioning cools and dehumidifies air coming
into the vehicle. It also operates in defrost to help
remove moisture from the vehicle. The air conditioning
does not operate at temperatures below approximately
35°F to 40°F (2°C to 4°C). If the system is operating in
the AUTO mode, turning the air conditioning off will
delete AUTO from the digital display and show current
mode and fan settings. The AUTO button must be
pressed to return to the automatic mode operation.
The vehicle uses a Solar Load Sensor, An Outside Air Temperature Sensor, and an Inside Temperature sensor and will use the best combination of heating and air conditioning to achieve the desired results.
You can override it by first hitting the "Mode" switch, then the "AC" switch. The compressor will go off then.
Strikes me as a bit odd that they design it for the compressor to stay on virtually all the time (causing a decrease in gas mileage), but yet they go to the skip-shift, which is a pain in the patooty as well as a potential safety issue, to save gasoline.
