Default Get it!

I've had mine for over a year bought used. Never had any problems. The car was reringed. Guess it costs a couple hundred bucks. Its a fun car.

a couple hundo to get it re-ringed?? I'd guess more like around $1500+ out of pocket...maybe even $2k.

I am just guessing, I am not positive. But it involves tearing into the engine and knowing what dealers charge, i can't imagine it being less than $1500....I could be wrong though.

I bought my 2001 Z06 used and it had 37000 miles. I have since put 4000 miles on it. I changed the oil as soon as i got it and watched for consumption and blowout on the bumper. No blowout, but it did use a quart in 2000 miles. So i added a quart. Then i have driven it the remaining 2000 miles without it using a SINGLE DROP.

Personally, i think people give the 01 z's a hard time because of the consumption issue. It is not that big of a deal.

I have a buddy who has an 03 EB Z06 with 28000 miles. I asked him if his used oil and he smiled funny and quietly said "yeah, about a quart every 4500 miles." Also, i have owned a 96 LT1 z28, an 99 LS1 SS, a 2000 LS1 SS, and now the 01 z06. ALL of these cars have used a little bit of oil in between changes.

So if your scared of buying an 01 because of oil consumption worries, dont be. They are every bit as good as any of the other years, unless HUD is essential in your tastes.

One more thing, the 385 hp rating, wow, a big 20 below 02's and up. I have a vararam and TPIS LT's and a 3 inch x pipe with cats and my car runs dead up with any of the newer years with similar setups. If it is that big of a deal to you, put the 02 and up cam in and there you go. 405 hp. I hope this was informative for you.

BUY THE 01!! THE MONEY YOU SAVE WILL BUY PARTS!!!!

Edit: just for reference i used Mobil 1 5w-30 (factory) oil when i changed it and an AC Delco filter. And the risks of things that could happen while your motor is getting reringed far outweigh the problem of it burning a little oil.

I bought my '01 in '00 and I love it. It does not burn a drop between changes and with mods it is making great power.

However, if I was in the market right now, I would go for an '02 unless the price of the '01 was significantly lower. The HUD, hotter cam, and lack of percieved issues are worth the extra money.

I was very panicked this summer whan i bought my 01 Z and i do use a little oil (about a quart in 1500-1700 miles) but this is with 75% aggresive drive 80% of which is city driving (very little highway) and even a track day here and there. I don't think that is anything to worry about and mine has never been re-ringed. The only highway trip i have taken was a 320 mile trip two weeks ago and i used zero oil so i know mine is from me driving like i drive through the gears in my all city driving.

I paid about 26.5 for a mint 01 Z from a dealer 2.5 months ago in 10 out of 10 condition with exactly 30k miles, you can't beat that. As far as the HP difference its all driver for the most part. Yes a great driver will get a little more out of an 02-04 not enough for you to notice outside of the track but at the track a LITTLE bit more. Now i raced (not on the street of course ) an 03 Z two weeks ago and took him at the lauch and held the distance for about the 10 seconds we went.

If you can find an 01 at a reasonable price buy it. Now if you find a great deal on an 02 of course they are great cars too.

01-02 = not much differnce and to me the best price i could find on a 02 in comparable condition was about 5k more, clearly not worth it. Then again i think i got a great deal on my 01

Mine burnt a quart every 800 miles w/ very hard driving.

Chevy replaced the valley seal (common reason for '02+ cars that use oil)

Car then burnt a quart in 1400 miles

Chevy then re-ringed the car for me and filled it back up with 5w30 mobil 1.

I took care in re-seating the rings.

Now use 0w40 oil mobil 1 and beat the **** out of the car. The car no longer uses oil... at all... with 6000-8000 mile oil change intervals and HPDE use.

Plain and simple the ring package doesn't work properly on the '01. I have heard that it takes 30-40k for them to seat better (as they are lower tension) but most owners never get that high.

I've very happy w/ my car post re-ring.

I have a very early 01 #00025 pilot build, never been reringed.
I drive in the higher RPM range and burn a quart every 3000mi.
Not a big deal!!!
A friend of mine has an 02 vert which burns a quart every 1000mi.
