Now I'm doubting.... I was asked if I turn on my car with the A/C on. I said I always leave it alone, so ... Yeah, It's on when turning it on...
his advice was 'no, you shouldn't' Not good for the car.
I don't have a clear explanation of why but this person drives a brand new C6!
Your input to this would help me learn more about what's best for the car. Thanks
I leave mine in auto; I don't see why it is an issue. The A/C compressor is not always engaged and I would guess during the initial start up it is not.
I keep the AC on only when needed. I always start the car first and then turn on the climate control when needed. I only have the AC switched on when necessary... I don't like the way the system constantly uses the AC compressor when all you need is the vents working.
The compressor is a wear item... it also reduces MPG... I understand that these units are more efficient and don't consume much power... but why have it engaged when its not needed...
Its easy enough to switch on the AC when I need to de-humidify or cool the car down... I had the manual system in my 99 and prefer that to the automatic system in my 04...

How do you engage the 'vents' without the compressor coming on? I never have been able to figure out how that works, as there are plenty of times, I could get by with only outside air coming in simply from the forward motion of the vette traveling down the road.

You mean you only want the vent? I previously posted this question and learned here that when both bottons are ON (A/C & vent) just press the A/C button for 2 sec's and it goes off. The only light on is the Vent button and the A/C will not come on.

I have another GM vehicle that now has over 60K miles on it and it is over 7 years old. Since I purchased it new, I have always kept the Air Conditioning on and let the system sense if the cold air is needed or not. So, that system is still working great with no problems. I just keep it on "auto" and let it do it's thing. And by the way I still average 28 to 30 miles per gallon highway driving at 70 mph.

Maybe it's my imagination, but I can perceive the power difference with and without the compressor engaged.
