Just bought a '98 hatchback with 37,000 mi., adult driven, still in like new condition. Love the car. Only one thing that irritates at this point. The dash makes creaking/popping sounds intermittantly (I assume as the car frame flexes due to lack of a hard/fixed top). Common ? Anyone else experience this problem? Thanks
Yeah. It's common. If you push-in the upper right corner of the trim around the radio you'll see there is probably some slop here. Someone posted some instructions here about a year ago that, alledgedly, can improve this condition. You might do a search on "rattle".
Mine has the slop but doesn't seem to rattle here. The only rattle I have seems to be coming from the glove box. When it starts to get to me, I open and close the glovebox and that usually takes care of it for a while. One of theses days I think I'll put some grease on the latch to see if it will dampen it.
I thought my dash was making noise, but it was where my hood meets the rubber adjustments under the hood at the windsheild. Put some vasoline on the groments and it went away. It would be worth a try, this idea was pointed out to me by a guy that restores cars, and he was right.
97Rob's on to something there. I took my baby to Corvette Specialists in Alexandria, VA and Don(mechanic) told me that's what they're supposed to do when they lubricate the chassis. He got the doors, hood and hatch latches and grommets, and 95% of the squeaking and creaking went away.
