I'm so paranoid about leaving the Vette without visual contact that I usually rush out of a store just to check to see if everything is still, O.K.. That's one of the problems with owning a nice car. At times it could drive you crazy as you want to keep it in mint condition. Even after two years of ownership I'm still a little paranoid.
I have done this more than once to folks walking up to my own vehicle that I knew, etc... but I never had the chance to do it to strangers...
except...
We were leaving a concert once and there was a limo parked across a narrow street from my truck. A young girl was walking up trying to look in it's windows when I reached into my pocket and hit my alarm and she nearly jumped 10 feet off the ground!! Her family and I all laughed quite a bit at that sight...

Don't worry, it's when you are NOT paranoid that you need to worry!!
Many years ago I walked out to the parking lot of my apartment about midnight to discover some guys removing the wheels from my vette. C2's didn't have panic buttons but I reached inside my apartment door, grabbed my S&W, and fired one shot into the woods behind the apartment. Had the same effect as the panic button. Never saw those good ole boys again.
Yeah, I know. Shouldn't have done it. But I was 22 years old and loved that car more than I was scared of the law.
I did something similar. The kid had his face pressed against my drivers side window. I was leaving my kids soccer game. The kids dad was standing right behind him. I hit the panic and the kid looked like he wet himself! As I walked up the dad shoots me a dirty look and I just laughed and left!
I've done that once when I had to park in front of my friends office (along a main road) and she was backing up and getting WAAAYYY to close for my comfort. Scared the hell out of her and she slammed on the brakes.
I knwo what your sayin, it could have backfired and she could have slammed on the gas too. Lifes a gamble
Sounds like you were lucky to see them in time. Radio Shack and Amazon.com both sell a wireless motion sensor (called The Reporter)which transmits to a base unit that runs off a 9volt or house current. You can put the sensors in the car or under the car and adjust the sensitivity to alert you when someone is near the car or in the car. Range is 1200 feet and price with base unit and one sensor is about $100. You can use up to 4 sensors with one base unit. I am amazed more people do not use them for their cars and when not traveling I use them for the house. They work great.
