I find myself topping off after the initial shutdown of the pump, take it out let it breathe a little and top it off with another half a gallon, just so i dont have to fuel up too often... is this bad for my y2k vette?

Will cause a faulty pressure read...
It will go away after a little gas is used up, but you will have to clear the code...
I've found this isn't necessary with the vette. On my pickup I can put another gallon or gallon and a half. On the vette when I tried it it cut back off real quick. Now I don't even try when it cuts off.

Most modern cars are the same...

No, not true. It depends on how the pump is set, and how far you've inserted the nozzle.
Most pumps, you can add some gas without setting a code, or without it running down the side.
Fifty years of pumping, and topping off, and never set a code. The worst that ever happened was I blew up a gas station because some ashes from the cigarette I was smoking set the spilled fuel from topping off on fire.
Foruntately, I had left the engine running, and got out of there before the car caught on fire as well. And, yes, I mailed them a check for the gas (just what I pumped).
That is crazy, Blew up a gas station and admitting too it. Too funny. I don't top off in the Vette only because I don't want to spill gas on the paint when I pull the nozzle out. Now the DD, I top it off all the time with no problems.
Here in California, we have the EPA vapor recovery system on the gasoline nozzles. It's a vacuum system the covers the fill spout of your vehicle's gas tank and the system vacuums off and captures the escaping gasoline vapors as they are emitted from the tank's spout. If you top off your tank, the excess gasoline in the fill spout is sucked up into the vapor recovery system and you lose it. I guess you can say that this system really sucks!
I only put about $15-$20 worth of gas in at a time because I don't want the extra weight. The only time I fill it is just before I store it for the winter.
