Default Magnesium wheel & sensor ??

Hi all, I just purchased a set of magnesium wheels off of a 02 vert, complete with sensors still attached. Question, I have a 99, will the 02 sensors work ok or will I have to use my stock ones? Does anyone know if a Magnesium wheel can be bent easily? One of the rims has a slight bend on the outside lip, must have hit something. I did not know about this prior to purchase, kind of pissed. I don't know if taking a hammer & a 2x4 to it is a good idea, like I said it is very slight, but noticeable. Thanks for any info.

Most wheel shops should be able to fix the bend for a small price.

You will need to switch your sensors to the ones from your car or buy another set. If yours are original, you might give serious consideration to purchasing new ones at this point.

I would not hammer on a magnesium wheel personally, I would contact a professional wheel repair facility. If you need a new one, you can contact Chuck at,

The last time I spoke with him they had about 20 brand new in the box 18" wheels.

Good luck... GUSTO

simple version...
'02 sensors are not compatible with a '99.

Do you guys know how the sensors attach? My ZR1 had them strapped on, these are not on that way. They look like they are glued on or something. The tires are still on the rims, so it is kind of hard to see. Thanks everyone.

They should be attached via the valve stem. Look at your valve stems (on the 99), they should look similar to the valve stems in the magnesium wheels. While the sensors appear similar, they operate on a different frequency than the other sensors. If the tires are off of the magnesium wheels you should be able to see the tps clearly.

If you do elect to switch sensors I recommend you also install new O-rings. You can get them at any good hardware store, #9's I believe they are. Just unscrew the nut from the sensor, remove the sensor from the old wheel and using a new O-ring reinstall it on the new wheel. I like to use a 1/4" drive deep socket on a "screw-driver" type handle so that I can get them hand tight with less chance of over torquing them.

The sensors will not work on your car. You will either have to switch sensors to your old ones or get some new ones. The ones in your '99 are somewhere between 5-6 years old now so you may want to consider just getting some new ones. Normal life for the sensors is 5-8 years.

There are a number of companies that specialize in repairing scraped or bent wheels. May want to check them out. They usually advertise in Corvette related magazines.
