I have an 04 zo6 I bought new, when I bought it there was only about 5 miles on it,I currently have about 6000. I have not had an oil change yet, the manual recommends 15000 miles on mobile 1 before a change. Is there a length of time that this should be done, like 6 months, a year or is oil good for the 15000 miles regardless of the time it is in the engine?
I have an 04, and changed the oil and filter the first time at 500 miles to be sure there were no small partical from the new engine floating around, second change at 1500, third change at 3000, I don't care what the manual says, oil is cheap compared to a rebuild and its the life blood of your engine.
By all means change it now.

If you actually looked at the manual you would see, it says to follow the DIC or 12 months, whichever occurs first.

yes lad change least 2 per year or every 3k
Syntec
get that oil changed ASAP then do it evry 3000 miles from there on out
3000 miles is way to short of an interval for synthetic oil and is a waste of money. Let go of the 60's belief, your engine won't last any longer with 3000 mile oil changes. Just change it once a year or when the DIC tells you to. If you must change something earlier, change out the oil filter (it's easy to get to).

I change mine when the DIC indicates a change is needed (less than 5%). GM is very conservative.
Conventional wisdom is that oil should be changed every 3,000 miles. This conventional wisdom refers to a time when castor oils were used in cars, before petroleum based oils, before synthetic oils - in other words a long time ago. We are talking about the first decade of the last century.
Castor oils are vegtabled based. They are a great lubricant, but don't last very long (they have a very low flash point). This is where the 3,000 mile rule came from - the 1908 period. Somehow it has stuck to this day. Of course it makes no sense today. It is just an old adage. It doesn't hurt to change it that often, just like it wouldn't hurt to wipe your dipstick with a $100 bill after you check the oil and throw it away. I don't do that either.
As a shareholder of Exxon Mobil, I thank you guys who change your oil every 3,000 miles. If that makes you feel good, why not change it every 500 miles. Think how much better you would feel.
Let's see...$50,000 car $50.00 oil & filter change.
The cost of the car doesn't change the fact that 3000 mile oil changes are not needed. Again, your engine won't last any longer than mine by following the DIC.

As mentioned above, the manual does not say to go 15k miles, but rather to change the oil when indicated by the oil life monitor, or at 12k miles, whichever comes first. Depending on how you drive, you may get between 6 and 10k before the oil life monitor says to change your oil.
