I was thinking of installing those stainless steel (or chrome) hoops behind the seats on my very. I was wondering how difficult they are to install myself. What tools are required and how much time does the process take. Finally any pics or advice would be much appreciated.
You can install the fake roll bars just like you would the fake Z06 brake ducts......Hell, you could just use duct tape if you want...whats the differance....
Disregard the haters. If they don't like something then no one else should like it.
If you like them, and many, many do, go for it. I have them in my 04 vert and they look awesome. Mine are bolted in and are fairly easy to install. Some went with the glued in ones but removal is impossible and you need to be extremely careful during installation. Mine are 2" show chrome and follow the seat shape perfectly and being bolted, in can be removed at a later date, if you choose. Go for it. You'll love the look.
Racefab, www.racefabinc.com is now making Corvette Roll Hoops for C5 Vettes. The roll hoops are fabricated with percision fixtures and approved racing-harness mounting points, and are certified by the SCCA. So they sound as if they are REAL. The installation seems easy for one to do in your own garage. Removal is easy. They are in Corvette Fever Jan 06 page 14.
Anyone tried these?

who said anything about them being roll bars...they are just for appearance being an attribute of the classical car era...there is nothing FAKE about them...if you want to tell me how they're fake....then maybe ill listen...

I agree completely. I've installed 2 sets, one on a black vert and just this past week on my Anniversary Red. The first were from Ecklers and had the "hugh" base which, if you were to bolt in required the gas tank to be dropped . So I epoxyed mine in. There are several threads about how to "set" the hoops as the epoxy is setting up to ensure the toneau clears it. I used both a shim at the back side and a folded towel to brace the hoop as it dried. The last set was from Creative Engine Covers and they have a "small" base on each leg of the hoop. These were easy to bolt in, but I did find it necessary to insert a shim under the base to ensure the hoop was verical and the toneau cleared it. If you decide to go with the large base and epoxy and can't find the earlier threads, PM me as I have pictures of the different steps.

You do not have to remove the tanks to install these hoops. They are engineered to clear the tanks and bolt/screw in on the crossover rail only. I know because we manufacture these items and have sold/installed a lot of them. It is pretty easy actually. If you're interested, PM me and I'll get you all the details.

Ok...I'll come clean.....I dont hate these "hoops". Actually I think they look pretty cool. It just makes me wonder how some things that are obviously fake are acceptable here on the Cf, and how some things are not. God forbid you ever put a stick on Z06 brake duct...... I guess it's just a matter of how hard it is for someone else to prove its fake if you're ever called on the carpet for it. You can look at a duct and tell its phoney, but for the hoops you would have more trouble telling how it's installed.
Hi,
Just saw your post,
I had the same question mid summer and after doing some home work, ordered the hoops from Matukus motorsports, on monday, had them by friday.
They are chrome and bolt on with 3/4 self tapping screws, so no problem with the gas tank.
The guys there at Matukus were more than helpful, and included the screws and drill bit with the hoops.
Took about an hour to install.
The toughest part was cutting the carpet. I butchered mine and ended up cutting leather gussets from a black purse that my wife has yet to miss.
The base fits perfect around the top of the trunk space and there are 4 screws per end on both sides, so a total of 16 screws per hoop.
The guys at Matukus said I could lift the car by the hoops if needed.
Sure they were kidding, but they are solid.

I have a set and have gotten very positive responses. Mine were made by a company in Kentucky a few miles from the museum. They are screwed in and the tanks don't have to be dropped. Installation about 30 minutes.
