This may be a stupid question but is there any reason to turn the cruise control on/off? Does it do any harm to just leave it in the on position, and activate the system when needed?
I think the reason it has an on/off switch is for safety, so you don't unknowingly turn it on. It takes merely a touch on the end of the turn signal stalk, which you could do accidentally. In actuality, it's not that big a hazard, in my opinion. I leave mine on all the time.

Umm yeah, the first part of the question... which I totally forgot to answer... What he said!!!

I leave mine on on every car I've owned. No reason to turn it off. Safety is not an issue. What fraction of a second might it take you to touch the brake?

True, but it's probably a federal requirement. Makes about as much sense as a 1-4 shift to save gas, while at the same time leaving the AC on all the time for moisture control, which wastes gas, when we could always turn it on only when needed in the winter.

GM, in my opinion, makes the easiest to use (and best) cruise control, but since it IS easy, I have bumped my on, in my Silverado (exact same control ) when I meant to slow, it hit accelerate briefly, before I hit the brake. If you manage to hit just the exact wrong set of circumstances you might bump something. Since it is so easy to turn on and off, why not just leave it off ?
I may be old school, but I don't see any reason to have something on if I'm not going to use it. Seems to me any electrical device is going to fail sooner if left on constantly. How many people leave their rear defroster on all the time, or the radio on with volume turned way down when not listening?

I wondered about leaving it on, but my guess is unless the cc is activated it is actually off. My wife's CLK has no such master switch.
