Gotta have the front and rear bumpers of my '02 C5 repainted.
My color is 86U Magnetic Red II.
Anyone know the best product out there which will best match the debth and reflection of this factory tri-color/tint job? Does OEM add tint to even the final clear coat?
its hit and miss - i had to have mine done a couple of years ago due to an unfortunate incident but it doesnt match perfectly - having said that the rear facia is still the factory paint and its not perfect either. I was told its becuse they are differant substraites the paint wont cure the same way, it dries darker.

let you know right now that matching Mag red is Biatch . I even had the paint reps come to my shop to mix the paint for my car . My color which is mag red I is close to what came on the caddies. The shop needs to do LOTS of spray outs. Find a shop thats familiar w/ the color/car. More than likely you'll have to blend the nose & the tail for a good match. Mind you that they don't match perfectly from the factory.
Hope this helps
If you are in south Texas, shoot me an email and I'll take care of it

they don't work w/ three stage
gotta do spray outs.
Like it or not the above pretty much sums it up. It's not even just getting the color to match out of the can, the base coat also plays an important role in the outcome, especially with the three stage colors. Also the number of coats applied will vary the tint. VERY DIFFICULT to get dead ***** on as they say, especially if you are a picky SOB (like myself and prob. 95% of us). I did a Torch red hood which you would think would be a piece of cake, and it still took me 3 times to get it where it's just OK. Best of luck
I'm in central Florida, and needed the front facia repainted on my Mag Red II '01. Everyone recommended Tim Burke in Maitland and he matched the color perfect for me. http://forums.corvetteforum.com/show...8&forum_id=103
We feel your pain, Bro. My C5 is MY. And, as you may very well know, the Mag Red, and, Millenium Yellow, are the only two o.e. colors that cost more from the GM (dealer) as an paint option code. In fact, these two particular colors are uniquely blended. And, in my case, MY has red and black specifically blended into the mix. And, yes, you may need several spray outs. However, a knowledgeable auto paint master will order the correct color and type of paint (primary concern), then custom blend to match. In my own experience, a neighbor hit my C5 (rear quarter panel and bumper damage to the paint only). I then took my C5 to a paint shop well known for custom color blending and paint schemes, and, they accomplished a beautiful and even finish. Good luck to you.

127B IS ALSO A MAG RED PAINT CODE ( SHERWIN WILLIAMS)
My car had the door and fender torn off while it was parked.
to replace the parts any joe blow could do, but to match my mag red on Y2K is a 3 stage project. Ill tell you next month how it comes out. Ive been waiting 4 months to get my car to a professional restorer another state away. Couple of paint tests until its right.
its 4 colors and clear coat. Its a bish and I didnt feel comfortible taking the car to the first 4 body shops I went to, then I found this guy. Im sure it will be well worth the wait, but its been a long 4 months. Should be a great Chirstmas gift
Been doing a bit more research and found out there are two Corvette 86U Mag Red's out there. One was applied by Corvette in '99 and little into '00. The other is called magnetic red II. Your glove box will tell you a color code starting with WA and that's how you'll know for sure what red you have. A number of aftermarket manufacture's make tri-color paint to match. It still takes a good deal of skill to shoot it correctly, don't even think about letting anyone OJT on it. For the WA 379E, for example PPG makes it (Deltron DBC, or 2000) the base color is 5402/1 they recommend 3 coats over a charcoal primer, then 5402/2 which is a red tinted clear coat (about 95% clear and 5% red tint, then that's lightly sanded and covered with at least 2 coats of regular clear for UV protection. Basically it's exactly how one shoots a candy apple red. The tint coat is what produces the luminesense or pearl glow - if you like that term better.
The more base you put on the darker the color and you can over do the tint coat as well. It really takes an experienced pro to blend in, or fade in this color, but it's done. Tri-color paint jobs aren't all that unsual these days as a lot of high value cars have them and the candies have certainly been around a long time. Rather than blend, I feel a better option is to remove the panel and re-shoot the entire piece, still getting a tit's on match is tough and requires someone who's been there - done that.
Okay, I've found the paint. Now I'm meeting with painters... who said Vette owners are ****? Thanks to everyone who pitched in their two cents.
I was very interested to read the posts re MagRed. I have started some threads regarding Millenium Yellow asking for genuine information about Exactly how the factory applies that particular paint. There is an internal paint spec document at GM which should be made available to us. No luck in obtaining, although I have the document numbers. This thread provided some valuable ideas and suggestions. I'm hoping the info about 5% blend in the first clear coat is the missing link in the MY mystery.
For all the extra you guys paid for that color, GM should have given you lifetime touchups
And the real kick in the pants - Mag Red was a 6 or 700 dollar option on the Corvette. Last year a friend of mine bought a Mag Red II GMC Envoy and the color was a $95 option! I guess it takes a lot more paint to do a Corvette???
