Does anyone have a good method of polishing the alternator up a bit? The casting is quite rough and even a little improvement would make the engine compartment look a lot better.
I have had success using Calyx Manifold Dressing on parts like that. Been thinking of having mine powder coated, but it is not in the budget right now. Just remember that what ever you do on the alternator, be sure to address that bracket as well. I have seen some nice work over shadowed by a stock looking bracket.
My $0.02.
You could post another thread, Someone posted a name not long ago about a person who would chrome the alternater for $200 and send it back to you! That is a pretty good deal, as I have seen chrome alternaters for about $550
Get a good arbor buffer with 8" to 10" wheels. Polish the alt and go crazy from there. I started there a couple years ago and now I do my own at home chroming. My current buffer is 5HP 220V.

Where is the best place to buy the polishing stuff?
With so much aluminum parts on the vette one could go crazy polishing!
I'd suggest sanding the entire thing down b4 starting polishing. Start with something like 600g to remove the heavy casting texture and work up to 2000g. By the time you're done with the sanding, the polishing will not only look much better, but also be much faster.

Good buffer with some power, good wheels, good compounds = not a lot of sanding. Let the buff's do the work (most of the time).
