Default quick question about gear swap

ok, i have 2.73's stock in my 1997 c5 automatic. I want to do a gear swap. i looked around and found c5 zo6 differentials off gmpartsdirect.com for a good price. but how in the heck do i get 3.73 rear differentials. the only one i found was slp's and it was $2,000. cant i just get my stock rear differential ring and pinion swapped out for 3.73's , or do i have to buy a complete new one from slp for $2000 ?
\\help!!!!

I believe that 3.42's or 3.73's R & P will not fit the 2.73 carrier without machine work which probably ends up weakening the carrier structure. After 3.42's the price goes up pretty quickly for 3.73's or 4.10's.

There is no machining processes required for a 2-series differential conversion and when built properly, there is NO strength difference between the 2 or 3-series differentials. We've been building these with outstanding success in durability/performance for over 3 years now...

Are you saying you can do a gear swap to 3.42s or better in the 2.73 housing? I was told different. If thats the case I have a 2.73 laying around that isn't as worthless as I thought.

You can buy a 3.73 directly from DTE. They will charge you a core charge and refund the money when you return your old core.

If you are considering this conversion - there are other factors to consider, you will have to either buy a Predator or a LS1 Edit (there are others, too) or go somewhere where someone with experience can modify the programming on the PCM for you. You will need to have things like shift points and shift pressures changed to take full advantage of the higher (numerical) gearing.

I have friends that have made this swap...one went from a 2.73 to a 3.42. Another went from a 3.15 to a 3.73. Both are very happy with the outcome. You might consider going over to the Scan and Tune Forum here on CF and post any questions over there. There are a couple of guys - notably Mike Mercury that are extremely knowlegable on this topic and very willing to answer some questions.

Good luck!

I went from 2.73:1 to ECS/DTE hardened 3.90:1 (A4) and I couldn't be happier. I just crossed the 500 mile break in milestone and just started getting on it a little. Boy!! Talk about major PermaGrin(tm)

And DTE are way I got their trans brace as well

GM is putting 3:73's in the 06 Zo6 I heard. I wonder if you can get just the Ring and Pinion from them?

I've a 2.73, A4 (Auto) and wanna a little more oomph on the red light (specially when a Rustang's next to me). I'm not heavily into track racing, but would like to AutoX sometimes and some street racing. Basically, I want it to run like a "Corvette" should run, with some quickness. I'm considering going to 3.42 (from 2.73 that I now have). I've been told by some that I should change the TC also while doing this mod. I don't have much knowledge about this. Plz tell me the Pros and Cons of upgraded TC. Do I "NEED" to change the TC to get the results I'm after ? And will it HELP in Freeway speeds also (from the roll), such as going from 70 - 100+ much quicker?

If you can just change the gears and use the same case (rebuild my 2.73), how much for that? I'm hoping a complete rebuild, including gaskets, and seals..etc. Plz Educate me about the gears and TC......

Thanks in advance...

Adding a HP torque converter will always make the car accelerate much faster and harder than without, so the choice is ultimately yours on what your budget is for the driveline upgrade and how quick you want your car to be.

Also, here is a menu of our current 2005 differential options and prices.
