Sunday morning on a drive home I started to notice a squeek coming from the engine compartement. Sounds like its coming from the belt. Its loudest at idle and gradually goes away after 2500rpm... What are my options here... its a y2k mn6 coupe...
Take a bar of soap and lightly rub it on the underside of the belt.
that will work for a little while...but if they are stretched out or worn some...new belts should do it! I ran thru this on my 97 with 68K miles on the original belts...hour later...squeek was gone!
I had a sqweak that was more pre-dominant on moist mornings, that turned into an all day thing this past weekend, a little wd-40 on the idler pulley and presto...
Belt squeeks that are silenced by an application of some type of lube/belt dressing will probably return, and sooner than later. A belt change is in your (near) future.
If you haven't done a belt change yourself yet, wait for the engine compartment to cool first. Find the main belt tensioner (top pulley on passenger side), place a socket wrench on the tensioner nut and push it toward the middle of the engine until there is enough slack to remove the belt. Repeat this procedure for the A/C belt, its tensioner it a little harder to reach because it is under the power steering fluid reservoir. Before installing your new belts, some here recommend cleaning out the pulley grooves with a wire brush/emery cloth. Make sure to install the A/C belt before the main belt.
Do not try to loosen/remove any nuts in this process, moving the belt tensioners is all that is needed.
sounds like bird chirping? i got it too. time for a belt change.
I had the same problem about 2 years ago. Changed both belts; problem solved! This is the easiest fix. If you still have a problem, it could be an idler pulley.
Replace the belt and the idler!! Now!! Lose the belt and it will over heat in a heart beat! Lose the belt going up the Grape Vine, tow at best new engine at worst!! Once you over heat an engine it will never be the same.
Most autoparts stores stoock them or can get them next day...
Best prices I found were at Autozone... for GoodYear Gatorback.
Just call and tell them your year and they will be able to tell you if they have it in stock or will get it next day.
Local CarQuest keeps Dayco in stock, but they are About $65 for the pair vs $50 for the GoodYear
I had a squeeking belt recently. Fixed it. I may have a different situation. Being a cammed car, my 240ft./lb. torqued damper bolt backed out a bit, so the alignment wasn't true and was squeeling. Torqued her back down, and squeel is completely gone.
