What I've been told by several people (not sure how true it is for sure yet) is that the ONLY places to get chrome done right is in California, as they are the only state that allows the chemicals to the full triple chrome plating, which is what you must use to get it to truly last.
I'm looking at getting my wheels chromed here soon is the reason I was inquiring.

I think someone feed you a line on that one. If anything CA would be the place they CAN'T use certain chemicals. There are many good chrome shops for triple plate (copper, nickel, chrome) around the U.S. I bet the few left in CA sub it out across the border
I used a company in Cincinnati Ohio called Keystone Automotive Ind.
to rechrome some parts for a VW Dune buggy I restored. Definately not cheap, the more parts the better the deal.

Surprisingly, SoCal is easily the biggest concentrated area of chrome vendors.
CA is most worried about air quality. The chemicals used in the chroming process don't affect that much, and thus, aren't regulated as strictly as you might think. The disposal of such chemicals is a problem, and a lot of states do make it very difficult for a business of this nature to survive, but you are correct in that it being a myth about it being the ONLY state that does it. It most definitely is not.
Chrome plating, as beautiful as the finished parts may be, is a very dirty, nasty business. Anyone who's ever been in a plating shop can attest to that.
For those 'old timers' here, there was a company called 'Design Specialties' and they had some of the finest chrome plating available. They're no longer around, but the company who did all their chrome plating is. 'Advanced Plating' is the company. They're located in Nashville, TN and their chrome plating is second to none. They take they're time, but believe me, it's well worth it. I've used them for the last 20 years & have never had a problem. Their chrome plating is flawless & stunningly beautiful!

You may find someone who will do it cheaper or faster, but nobody will do a better quality job than Advanced Plating. They stand behind their work, and they will not send out anything that you would not be proud to have on your car. Call Tom, he can be a little bit contrary sometimes, but he knows his stuff!
