While waiting for routine maintenance to be completed on my 2004 Z I was informed by the service rep that the screen was missing from my mass airflow sensor, and that this was the probable reason that my car was running 'lean'. It was suggested that whoever had installed the K&N filter system had removed the screen as there were scratch marks suggesting that pliers had been used to rip the screen off. Facing a $400 charge for a new mass airflow sensor I appealed to the service manager and ultimately to GM that I did not have the screen removed. Even the dealer's corvette specialist supported the people who installed the K&N filter who insisted that they did not removed the screen either accidentally or on purpose. A complaint filed with the dealer was received respectfully, but the service manager claimed that removing the screen would increase the car's horsepower and that the people who installed the K&N filter were known to routinely remove the screens. All of my appeals failed. He added that there were likely to be long term problems if I did not have a new mass airlow sensor installed with a screen.
Twenty four hours later the service manager called to apologize. A new mass airflow sensor had arrived from GM and it had no screen. Apparently the screen is not a part of the mass airflow sensor for the 2004 Z 06. Hopefully no one reading this will face the same hassle I did.

That guy doesn't even know if he is on foot or horseback. I would have alot of fun with the naysayers at that dealer after the screenless MAF showed up. At least they admitted their mistake.
Scary stuff them dealerships. So what does he say about the "plier marks" now. What a putz. You should at least be comped an oil change, just make sure that the tech remembers how to fully tighten the filter.
scary stuff out there. I found a good dealer local for the mundane stuff I will not do myslef. Good luck with finding a new dealer but at least he was honest.

NO! The screen is there to straighten out the airflow from the airbox.
On the 02's GM knew exactly how the airflows through the airbox and could get away with removing the screen.
The drawback for 02-04 owners is when someone changes to a performance air intake it will significantly change the airflow and will cause the readings to go out of whack. The easiest way to tune around that would be to swap to an 01 MAF and copy the MAF tables as well and tune from there.
It's amazing how clueless some dealers are. I've taken 2 of my Z06's to two different dealerships and both times they asked me if it were an automatic or 5 speed. A 5 speed! LOL!

On my '98 I removed the screen, installed a Vortex intake and polished the MAF ends and trimmed the blade in the middle. Worked great and never had any codes or other problems. I know it worked because with no other mods lowered E.T. at the strip.

sometimes i wouldn't trust the tech to that right...
