call me a wussy but the thought of taking my c5 out on slippery ice & snow roads is not one that i plan to do. my hat goes off to those either skilled or brave enough to take their c5s out the slick stuff but i'm not one of them. bub

I have posted this before - but I used to have Firebird Formulas that I drove year round - they had the goodyear gatorback 50 series tires on 16" rims stock -

For the winter I used steel rims from a police impala (the right ofest for the rear disc brakes... ) and put P215/78/15 m+s radials on them -

That made the Firebird a real hoot to drive in the snow (with posi) - it would dig really good, and I could cut a donut like you wouldn't believe!

Plus the car (and all black 89 formula 350 ) looked like a police car with those rims.

I have never heard of anyone doing this with a C5, but if I were adament about driving it in the snow, I would seriously look into what narrow rims I could put tall-aspect ratio tires on that would have nearly the same rolling diameter as the stock setup -

This would repulse the waxer crowd, but if 'ya gotta do it, do it right.....

There's no doubt that this is solid advice, except for one thing. I doubt that you could get any tire that was skinny, yet narrow, in a diameter anywhere near the OD of the stock C-5 tire. Even if you could, I think that you'd need at least a 17" rim to clear the brakes, and that would probably be the deal breaker.

Hi leadfoot -

Good point! On the bird I could use 15" steel wheels that cleared the brakes - but the vette brakes are probably bigger -

I live near Chicago as well---I wouldn't take the Vette out if you paid me. With all the goofy drivers out there, I might be fine, but the others on new snow--look out

I just want to move south, soon

It's hard for me to even think about taking any of my vettes out in the winter especially since Thanksgiving we have had between 70 and 80 inches of snow and it is snowing hard as I write this. I just plowed my driveway last night and as I opened the garage doors my babies started blowing their horns and blinking their lights as to so "don't even think about taking us out".

I have yet to have to take my vette out in the snow or ice (I now have a old pick up). Lots of rainy day trips, but not snow. I had a 97 Z-28 that I drove daily (my only car)to work in all types of weather. It was OK in snow and ice as long as you started in a higher gear, I usually used 3rd, stopped slow and no quick steering wheel movements. It was a lot better than the car I owned before the Z-28, a 87 Buick GN. Now that car was absolutely horrible in the snow and ice. My butt was puckered up the whole time I drove it in bad weather (even rain). I feel that it was due to the old fashioned type posi traction rear end. The Z-28 did not tend to come around as fast as the Buick GN wanted to and did.

Here is mine, right when the storm started. I am using Goodyear M&S on wagon wheels. I was out having fun, doing a spirited drive in the snow. By the time I got in, it was at least 1.5 or 2" on the ground. The keyword is smart driving and taking it easy.

I have no choice but to drive in the snow. We've only had a couple of inches so far this year and I don't think my FRC handled that bad. Downshifting is not a problem if you rev. match. Just for fun, I do 3 double clutch heel-toe downshifts sequentially going from 5th to2nd and it doesn't upset the car's balance, even on snow!

I'd take pics of mine, but the car is at the dealer having the oil sensor and check valve replaced.

Tomorrow....

That's the same setup I just bought (new set of Goodyear EMT M&S, new set of sensors, gray wagon wheels). Unfortunately they are all still sitting in my garage waiting until my appointment tomorrow to be mounted. I "idled" my way into work today on my summers.

You all in Chicago got what we got in STL a few hours earlier. All I can say is I am grateful I have a FWD DD and don't have to drive the Vette in the snow.

That's what my wife and I keep asking each other !!

As far as driving the vette in the snow, I say why bother -- as others have said get another daily driver and let the vette sit, I have nothing to prove by driving it just to say it's possible.

And I'm not tryin to be proving anything. The vette is my ONLY car, so it IS my daily driver. The car was designed to be used in snow with the proper tires. Yes it is a lower car but if there is more then 4" of snow on the ground anyway I don't want the office to give me an excuse to come into work.

What I don't get is why everybody thinks the vette is an inappropriate for a snow driver, just cause it is more expensive then the average car out there, what bout the mercedes, jags, lexus' and BMW's who are people's rear wheel drive daily drivers driven in the snow?

To me, daily driver (thats not the vette)= another car to throw money at, take up space, costs to insure, tags, registration, inspection, emissions. Thats why my c5 is my daily driver. It does EVERYTHING I need it to do, including going to the store, towing a trailer, going to the track, getting me to work and school, in the spring, summer, fall and winter. C5's arent getting any more valueable, might as well use it. But hey, to each their own.

Okay, Eric enjoy your "daily driver" but you'll get tired of the salt and sand ruining the chassis, chunks of snow/ice hitting your windshield, the increased chance of someone sliding in the snow and ice and clipping off your rear end...the list will be long...buy something cheap that runs and use it for those "bad" days and you'll really enjoy the Vette on those good days. Besides your insurance will go down when you list your Vette as a "pleasure" vehicle, and she'll always look her best!

Yup, mine is a DD also with 23000 on the clock with the original tires and I drove in the snow last year with no problems and have driven in the snow once this year with no problems. But of course I must have an unusual vette because mine doesn't leak. I hear all these guys who don't even take thier cars out if it rains, I feel sorry for them that they get these vettes that leak, but I think they must get really good deals on them and can just let them sit and rot.

Well like I said, to each his own. I didnt buy my car to look at it and I dont want it to rot away in hibernation, so some wear on the underside of the car is expected and doesn't bother me. I don't go to car "shows" because I really have no interest in them. The windshield? Its the original one and it does not have ONE PIT or ONE CRACK or one chip in it. Heck, the water still beads off of it when I drive it in the "rain"... And if it does crack or chip, I have zero deductible for glass replacement. Speaking of insurance, I'm 24 and I pay $1300 a year for full coverage. Breaks down to a little over $100 a month. Later this year when I turn 25, I'll be in the next age bracket so it'll be even lower.

The paint on the car? Everyone complains about the 'chevy paint' but guess what I think this car's paint is very good. Its ALOT better then the paint on my 97 maxima. The only areas that look a little sand blasted are the parts behind my wheels. But guess what, the car has 100K miles on it! For that many miles I think the car looks damn good.

Someone plowing into me? That could happen anywhere at any time. Some people get so hung up about a mass produced car- a chevrolet none the less- they double park it and if it gets the slightest ding or scratch they go ape. Its just a car, not a ferrari and not a lamborghini.

I DO enjoy my car on nice days with the top off, but I can ALSO enjoy it on the lousy days too. How am I going to enjoy my car more on a sunny day if the car was driven in the winter time or not... i prefer use my car and get my money's worth... to each his own..
