I have thought and thought about this for quite sometime.
The following conclusions are mine and mine alone. (others may share my opinion)
Where else in the good ole U.S. of A. can you get a car for mid 20's (01 and up) that can out perform 95% of ALLthe rest of the cars in BOTH extremes? Extremes being Fast as lightning OR, economical with virtually and just plain fun to drive and lack of any significant repair costs (except tires ).
Really - The feeling while driving the C5 is unforgetable - I think about how fun it is every day - literally!
My C5 is a dd and has been very reliable, not to mention 30 mpg on the highway. The only major expense will be tires when the time comes - I usually get about 30k on a set, so that's not too bad if you amortize the cost over the three years it takes me to rack up that mileage. This is our third C5. I had a '93 C4 before, and there is no comparison.
I bought mine 7 months ago with 50K now it has 66K, i have bought gas and oil only, i put asside 150/mo for tires belts hoses and other things that might pop up, might be lowering that to 100 not that i have 1000 set aside, i dotn have a spare car, and i DO use run craps. i could save 100/tire if i get a inflation kit and switch tires. car is paid for but i do spend about 100/mo for insurance and about half that for gas.
in conclusion it costs me about 300/mo total including future minor repairs.
Bought my '00 coupe new. It now has about 12.5k miles. Only expense other than gas is 5 oils changes at about $25-30, I do it myself. Just before warranty ran out I got a new battery. I then switched that new battery into one of my other cars and installed an optima red-top. Zero problems of any kind. I get about 27-29 mpg. It's mostly highway driving at 70-75 mph
My 04 Coupe is my second Vette. Both have been trouble free except for an oil pressure sending unit on my first one.
I am not burning regular gas. The computer adjusted whatever it needed to adjust and I have encountered no pinging or reduction in my 28-29 highway mileage. I estimate it saves me about $500/year but it really makes me feel good when I fuel up at a station with a $.30 cents difference between regular and high test.
