Lately, I've been hearing a whistle that seems to be coming from the engine compartment. I can only hear it when accelerating and the pitch of the whistle gets higher as the RMPs increase. The sound seems to be getting more apparent.
What could this be? I have a Halltech air intake, which I've heard can cause a sound like this. I also just got 4.10 gears installed, but I understand that the whine that gears can produce does NOT change pitch upon acceleration. Is that true?
I have had this problem to and noticed it when i went under over-passes on the parkway. I to have the Halltech Stinger intake and have yet to track this problem down. That is the only mod if have on the car
Is it that police officer you ran over last week? You're supposed to check under the hood after you run things over!!!
The vacuum hose might be it. But a bad bearing could have similar characteristics . . . Alternator? . . . Power steering pump? You can check those with a mechanic's stethoscpoe (like a regular stethoscope, but with a solid metal rod that you put up against whatever part you're trying to hear the noise from). They are great for detecting mechanical noises coming from inside a component. Won't be much help finding a vacuum leak, though. They're available at most tool supply stores. They're relatively cheap - Under $20 I think. You'd probably want someone inside the car running the rpm up and down while you listen.
Good luck!

I have a whistle after starting up..then the engine sound changes and the whistling stops..it's like a vacuum sound until it goes through it's check/warm up cycle.
Damn, I guess all the old guys on this forum must have gotten C6's. This problem/question is an old one. The C5 intake manifold whistles. That is all. There is a fix described somewhere. There's an internal blind passage that can be filled with epoxy or something like that which stops the whistle.
For anyone who plans on replacing their OEM rotors, take this advise and get zinc coated ones. I painted the "hats" and fins between the rotors with a hi-temp exhaust manifold paint and still got rust. So ro save time and money I recommend getting zinc coated rotors. So I now have ordered a set of silver zinc coated rotors with powder coated hats (in black) coming from Rotorpros.com.
Here are pictures on my rotors now.
