Default Oil usage question........same rings?

I am always hearing the issue about 2001 oil burning problems, is it that they used a certain type of ring ONLY that year that caused the problem or were the same rings used previously from 97 to 00?
I realize that they were changed in '02.
Were they experimenting in '01 or what?, because I don't hear of problems before that.........Thanks

I think I've read that the problems occurred from 00 to 01. Who knows what the heck they were doing? Maybe it had something to do with pushing the HP up from 345 to 350. Wish they'd figure out how to fix the damned fuel gauge problems.

I feel your pain - my fuel senders have been replaced 3x.
The silver contacts on the senders are eroded by the sulphur in the fuel (or so GM says)...and I'm already using the lowest sulphur gas I can find (emailed several fuel manufacturer engineering depts, compared the ppm's in each)

The design was changed in 2002, but GM will not authorize (warranty replacement using) 2002 parts on a 2001.

Normally happens to me when the blend changes from summer to winter or winter to summer.

re the fuel guage, just add a bottle Techron Fuel system cleaner or Chemtool B-12 cleaner to a tankful.... it should keep those contacts clean

Don't mean to hijack, but how difficult is the fuel sender replacement?
