Ok I know what your thinking. But I assure you this isn't another, Which tire is better thread. It looks like I'm going to have to get a set of tires here in the near future. I pretty much know what I want. Michelin Pilot Sport PS2's or Bridgestone Potenza 050A's. I just need to know where is the cheapest place to get them. Yeah I know, I'm driving a Vette, I shouldn't be worried about cost right. Well wouldn't you know it the brakes on my Z are also on their way out. So It looks like I've got two expendetures that I'm going to have to deal with. Are you guys getting tires locally or online. I'm in the Atlanta area. Thanks for any pointers.
I've been getting my tires online. Prices are usually cheaper even including shipping. I also have a good friend who mounts and balances them for me. Check Tire Rack...they're a supporting vendor.
I bought my Michelin Pilot Sports (not PS2s) from Costco for 1300 installed with a road hazard warranty. Looks like you have 4 or 5 Costcos around Atlanta, maybe they can help you. PS I bought the non PS2s because I like the tread pattern better. No rain in Arizona...
Second that on the Firestone Wide Ovals. Just put one four from Tire Rack ( top notch! ). Can not believe the price ( maybe 1/2 of the PS1s ) and they are great daily driver tires ( especailly in the rain ).
For maximum grip and all that good stuff, the tires you are looking at are best. I can not say how much of a different you would see between them, but my wallet sure can.
As far as telling a difference, I'm probably pretty sensitive. After driving on the PS1's for about 100 miles I absolutly hated them compaired to the Supercars. If the PS2's or the Bridgestone 050A's are better then the Supercars that is what I want. A tire that will work on the street and still be able to go around the track occasionaly.
I buy the vast majority of my tires online through the Tirerack and have them mounted at a local import tuner/high performance kind of specialty place where they tend to care a little more about the wheels than the typical chain tire store.
As an FYI, the 50As have a UTQG of 140 and the PS2s have 220. Based on the UTQG, the 50As are going to handle better in the dry, but wear out faster. Both of them rank very highly on the Tirerack customer survey.
Ok I know what your thinking.
Michelin Pilot Sport PS2's or Bridgestone Potenza 050A's.
I've never been disappointed with the Tirerack -- a couple of times I found tires somewhere else on the Internet that were a dollar or two cheaper but I always did business with Tirerack anyway -- now I don't even try other places.
I recently had to replace the Pilot Sports that came from the factory on my new Porsche (Carrera 996) at only 6200 miles (the car was mis-aligned from the dealer and wore the tires down to the steel belts on the inside edge) the dealer replaced them with Potenza 050s because it was all they could get that afternoon in the right size.
I am not happy with these tires. They should handle better since they are softer rubber, but the car feels squirrelly. I've had it aligned, fiddled all over the place with tire pressure, and that helps only a little bit.
