Yup! go with the stock changer. I just installed one in my 98. I had to do the splice trick, but if your is a 99 or newer they come with all the plugs installed. The nice thing is the stock one is a 12 disc unit, and you can get the factory brackets and cables for a fairly good price! I got mine for a killer price essentially brand new right off the fors sale section on the CF. I looked at a factory install and it is exactly factory! (except where I had to splice) The 98s had the speaker plug installed but the control lines were not installed.
the interface between the factory head unit and factory CD changer is proprietary.
Unless you want to replace the entire system, or try an aftermarket CD changer and find an adapter module that will allow it to work properly (good luck doing so) ... then the factory CD changer would be your only choice.

I'm in the process of taking mine out and I'll be putting it up for sale soon. I was thinking of asking $200 shipped, which would include the factory brackets and the 12-disc magazine. You'd have to get a cable, as there's no easy way for me to extracate it from the car (it's tied into all kinds of other wires).
I bought a 2003 where the previous owner put in an MP3 player supposedly works great but I sure cant figure how to use it. I am gonna take it out soon and stick with the CD. I guess you can download music and put it in files on it and play thousands of recordings. But just not for this old dog. If anyone is interested in it let me know I will post brand name later tomorrow.
The stock changer may not play CD-R's as mine does not. Just had it checked at dealer and they determined there was nothing wrong as it played store bought CD's fine. Owners manual states CD-R's may not play. It also does not play MP3's.
Make sure you get a factory one you know is original and not a refurbished one. My factory one broke (rare as far as I read on CF) and has been replaced 3 times under warranty with a refurbished unit. That 3rd refurbished unit is now broke. All of the refurbished have had mechanical problems which cause the cd's to get stuck and not play.
I wonder if there is a direct replacement for my stock changer to one that plays MP3's???

I got some tips from another forum, and it seemed to work for me:
* burn your CD no faster than a 4x rate
* don't use blank media that has a silver colored backing.
Gold and Black seem to work better.

That's strange. My 96 GMC Sierra 3/4 T has a stock Delco 12 disc changer and it plays mp3 rips as well as CD-R backup copies.
I haven't tried the 04 C5's changer yet though...
I would hope that they wouldn't be going backwards with technology.

I had that problem burning CD's on my computer. I tried every brand of CD burn software out there and still they wouldn't play; almost gave up and then bought NERO BURNING ROM program. It plays absolutely everything I record on it on my '01 coupe. Why, I don't know.
I think it cost around $70 for the download to my computer but it was well worth it!
Has anyone else had the same experience?
