I am looking at a 2002 on a car lot and noticed a small ring, bout the size of a 50 cent piece in the paint. You could feel a raise in the shape of the ring. Not really a noticable thing unless you are really inspecting it, but once you find it you really notice it. It is on the rear end passenger side on the hatch part of the rear. Does anyone know if this is a blemish or if this could be some sort of factory marking for a wing installtion or something?
blemish or faulty repair for sure. no markings for wings etc were done by the factory. have u looked carefully at the otehr side too? perhaps it did have a wing on it that has been removed...did u look for a repaint on it? does it line up with the latches on the underside where maybe someone tried to pry the trunk/hatch (didnt state if it was vert, Z06 or coupe) while it was locked and it made the mark? post a pic and it might help. normal its not, bad and worrysome-still dont know yet...
don't have any pictures of it, not sure when I can get back in to try to get one either. didn't see a matching "ring" on the other side, just the one on the passengerside rear. It's a hardtop covert. It's on the top of the body in the rear. It sort of has a suctioncup appearance to it.... sorry i'm havin a hard time tryin to explain what it looks like. But knowing that it is NOT factory is a big help so thank you for that piece of info.

If its on a dealer lot, ask them to fix it as part of the deal. As an estimate, I had a rear quaryter panel refinished after i was keyed for $ 400. They has to snad an fill a big section and then do the usual multi layer paint. I would think your blemish would cost much less.

if this is the problem, it affects most of the C5 production run.
chemical leeching from the insulation material between the inner and outer hatch panels causes the paint to blister.
if the miles are low enough, GM *might* agree to buy the panel, but good luck with the glass. I was told (by the dealer and GM customer care) that they would *not* guarantee the rear glass would not be broken during the repair,
AND
if the glass was broken during the repair, it was *my* responsibility to pay for a new one - the dealer, the glass shop, nor GM would take responsibility.

Is it a perfect circle? If not, it may be the result of bird droppings. Ask me how I know. In my case, a professional detailer was able to buff the car and remove the blemish.
"hardtop covert" - do you mean it's a convertible with a motorized hard shell?
Is the car missing the antenna? The previous owner may have removed it and filled in the hole. If it is indeed a hardtop convertible perhaps that was part of the conversion process...?
