[living with 4.10s] looking for experience
i am about to switch over to either 4.10's or 3.90's in my C6. i was wondering if you C5 guys who have done the 4.10's in your cars could give me your long term evaluations on this mod. mine is currently my daily driver, but my commute is about .75 miles, so i am not worried about 1-2 hours of bumper to bumper traffic every morning. additionally, the C6 guys (God love 'em) seem to be overly conservative with thier new rides and tend to skoff at things like bullet exhausts, and mods in general, and as such, i havent gained much in the way of constructive feedback on thier forum. so i come to you wise and experienced C5 gurus for the advice i seek. i think the 4.10s might be a bit over the top, as my car will likely never see a 1/4 mile course, but i also think the 3.90's might be a bit too mild. if you have experience with either of these configurations, i would appreciate it if you could give me some of your thoughts.
Honestly, you probably won't see that much difference between the 3.90s and the 4.10s - they both do a wonderful job at creating real interesting traction control issues for you. I have a similarly short commute and am certainly happy with my 4.10 install that I just had done in December.
About the C6 guys shunning the "modding scene", it's probably because the cars are so new. Give them some time to get used to their vehicles and they'll probably hit the modding scene as well. Although in their defense, I can understand them not wanting to accidently screw up their $70,000 Z06.

do you have any other mods? did you swap out the RFs for something stickier (PS2s)?
i'm not too interested in getting off the line any faster. i just want to have more pop available while rolling. something that'll snap my own neck back even when i know its coming.
as for the C6 guys, i know a bunch of them lurk over here so it was a nice chance for me to bust ***** a bit. most of them are just too old to appreciate bullets and neck snapping acceleration, i understand.

Nope, not yet. I have a GHL exhaust, Halltech Stinger air intake and a Hurst short shifter.

In my opinion, that's one of the best features of the 4.10:1 differential. My car really feels its power at about 3,500 rpms. I enjoy giving 'er gas to swing around slower moving vehicles (while keeping within the speed limit, of course!) in motion.
If you're not going to frequent the 1/4 scene then the 4.10's are definitely the way to go, IMO. I've had them more than two years and couldn't imagine going any higher (lower numerically) in gearing. There's about a 5% difference between them and the 3.90's so owners with high-hp setups and those with autos tend to stay away from the 4.10's. They're terriffic with a 6-speed and significant mods like I have, though. I'd dial it back a ratio or two if I were doing a s/c or tt setup. For a stock or h/c 6-speed, the 4.10's are the best addition you can make, IMO. They make driving so much more fun.
FYI, here are the speed tables for 3.42, 3.73, 3.90 and 4.10 gears on a C5 6-speed.

yes, i have a 6 speed and only a few minor bolt ons, with the potential to do some LT headers in the future. i suppose i might get to 390 rwhp at most.
thanks for all of your opinions!!!! 4.10s it is!!!

Just out of interest whats the cost (parts/install) to move from 3.42 to 3.90 setup?
Probably right around $2500, depending on the gears that you get and the place that installs them. You will shell out more than that initially, but you can get a refund if you send your core back to the gear manufacturer.
