I heard one in Ft. Worth this spring at a national tour event with out the mufflers and it sounded very mean (in a not for the street type of way). Having heard all of the other Z06's, I would not do this! The factory exhaust sounds sooo good. As for the performance gains, I have no idea!
good luck,

'02 EB Z06 with a TPW or 8-20
I was co-driving the mufferless Z06 SS39 heard. We took off the stock Ti mufflers and installed a simple 2.5" 90 degree elbows pointing down off the h-pipe so the hot gases would be directed away from all the chassis plastic and drivetrain. That was worth 25+ lb. It is loud inside the car because the sound hits the ground and deflects back up into the interior, but this Z06 is mostly dedicated to autox use only. It does resonate in the typical 2500 rpm range on the street, but since it is a six speed a speed or gear change can avoid this. From the outside at a distance it does not sound very loud, but will get peoples attention WOT; especially if they are in the lane next to you as you pull away. I like it for competition; I feel more connected with controlling the engine in the turns because I can hear what it is doing.
We have yet to do a dyno or time comparison, but that Z06 with the turndowns seems to accelerate harder than the Z06 with the stock system I bought later, just seat of the pants.
