Default Fair Price? '01

1) '01 Silver coupe, automatic, Bose sound sytem, dual climate, HUD, with 73,500 miles, buying it from dealership, out of warranty (dealer gives 90 day/3 month warranty; he offered powertrain or bumper to bumper at, what I thought was, an exhorbitant price).

Car has silver dollar size paint chip on driver's door (dealer will repaint door for $325), and inside looks to be in very good condition, except for small 2" separation on seam side of driver's seat back (dealer says that can be fixed with real leather = $150, or synthetic leather = $100).

He was asking $21,000 (plus $325 for door repaint & $489 dealer fee). (I thought "dealer fee" was included in car price.) I talked him down to $20,000 (plus $325 for door repaint & $489 dealer fee); final price (excluding tax, tags, title) = $20,814.

Fair price? (Miami area)

2) Also thinking about extended warranty with either AA Auto Warranty, Warranties4wheels.com, or SmartAutoWarranty.com. (Warranty Direct, supposedly the best company, won't insure cars with more than 50k.) Any experience, advice, recommendations, opinions?

David

Maybe just me, but i think that's way to high for the age and mileage.
Look on eBay.
You can buy a 2004 coupe with 15 to 20K miles every once in a while for under 30K there .. from a dealer !!
I have myself bought six cars on eBay and always fared well!

Sounds high for the miles. IMO, the dealer fees are . $489 is ridiculous. Shop around more. There are a lot of very nice cars out there with less miles and only a bit more money.

As far as the extended warranty goes, good to have one, but be very careful on who you buy from. Several well known companies have already gone under and those three are ones that at least I have not heard of.

Good luck.

I can't go too much higher than $20-21K. Also, I'd rather deal with a local.

BTW, I got this appraisal at Edmunds.com:

Edmunds.com Pricing Report
Vehicle2001 Chevrolet Corvette 2dr Hatchback (5.7L 8cyl 4A)

Trade-In Private Party Dealer Retail
National Base Price $20,976 $23,249 $25,347

Power Tilt and Telescopic Steering Wheel $79 $93 $117
Automatic Climate Control (2 Zone) - Driver and Passenger

Head-Up Display $98 $115 $146
Power Front Passenger Seat $80 $94 $119
Color Adjustment
Black $32 $36 $39

for Zip Code 33162 $27 $30 $33

73,500 miles $-1,875 $-1,875 $-1,875

Total $19,648 $22,013 $24,269

Does this look accurate?

Again, this is just my opinion from ahving bought and sold about two cars on average every year in the past six years.

If you are tied to local dealers and the 21K price range, you should plan on spending more time looking and shopping. This '01 Vette with 7xK miles is no deal. Period.

I agree with the others. It sounds a little high. Plus, they are selling a car with damage to the door. Who knows what else is wrong. Keep looking, you'll find one!

$489 is pretty high for a dealer/Doc fee, we only charge $189.50 for ours and we do all tag work on sight at the dealership I work for, if they were asking 21K then they probably only have 18K in the car at the most, typically dealers mark used cars cars up 3-4K, if you do want the car then I would make them fix what is wrong with it on there $$$ not yours

I have an 01 silver MN6 that is loaded and in excellent shape. It has 25,000 miles on it. I would not think of selling it for anywhere near $21000. Not even $31,000. Those guys, although well intentioned, should listen to the phrase "if it looks too good to be true then it is". An 05 with under 20,000 miles for less than $30,000 is "too good to be true".

Buy the car if you are sure it is in good shape (repairs will kill you if it has problems).

Just my 2 cents

I have an '01 Vert with 87K miles..... no issues !
I think the price is reasonable.... for a good condition car of that mileage
Not a steal, but reasonable.....
You should get at least another 75K out of the transmission before overhaul and another 125K miles out of the engine before overhaul.
Ask the dealer to run a service history.
If you are comfortable with the mechanical condition .... buy it...
Good Luck.

For comparison, another local dealer has the following:

'01 Red Coupe (my least favorite color), automatic; I didn't notice, but I'm pretty sure this Red Coupe does not have the Bose sound sytem, dual climate, HUD; excellent condition, 47,000 miles - $24,000; I might get them down to $23K, & I like the lower mileage, but I didn't want to go past $21-22 & I really don't want red. Not sure about "dealer fee". I thought "dealer fee" was the profit built into the price of the used car, not an add-on like on a new car. Maybe I'm wrong.

Look on eBay.

How do you check out cars on ebay to see what condition there in?

The door is missing paint on an area about the size of a large silver dollar. No indentation in door, just paint scraped off. He says it was a rock.

The dealer said he wanted the buyer to know about the damage to the door, and that's why he didn't fix it, so the buyer could see it & know what he's buying. Or maybe he didn't want to incur the cost & figured he'd dump the repair on the buyer.

I might have come across a better deal, if it's still available & the seller would come down. I'll check it today. A local private seller has:
'01 Silver coupe, automatic, Bose sound sytem, dual climate, HUD, with 40,000 miles in excellent condition for $24,500, & extended warranty exp. 2009, which is just what I was looking for. Got to check if it's really "excellent condition", & the "extended warranty" details - what's covered & by which company. Then let's see if he'll come down to $22K & we may have a new (first time) Vette owner on the forum.

Seller came down to $22K. I see it tomorrow morning & we'll go from there. The extended warranty is factory from GM . Got approval from Capital One. Let's do this! Hope to have news tomorrow.

I think there is a different problem in place here:
Many forum members think their cars are more worth than they actually are because of emotional attachment.

And eBay bottom price can also be beat by selling locally, finding a guy who really wants your car, or it being the nicest in the area.

eBay is my sure fire "price thermometer" on all cars because it is a true national and bottom dollar retail market. No BS. Cars sell and you can see for how much. I don't mind flying out and driving a car home 500 to 1000 miles when I can get it for 5 to 8 grand less (or more!) than locally and I ALWAYS had good luck with what I bought on eBay.

Of course everyone can do whatever they want ... more power to it !!
