Default Air Conditioning problem???

Since I bought my 98' Vette the display on the A/C has never worked but the air condtioner has always worked fine.

Now it wont blow cold air though. Everytime I put hit the A/C button it blinks a couple of times then it puts the vent on. With the display not working I really dont know what the A/C is doing. Any idea why its suddenly not working? Could it be something simple?

I rather just keep it then poay $500+ for a whole new unit.

Thanks

Two separate issues.

The dim display can be fixed for about $40 by a CF member Mandigital
His name is David Ruberg e-mail digital1_guy@charter.net
he includes a 5 year guarantee on his work....

He fixed mine it works better than new.
You need to remove the center console to get it out. Serach on center console and you fill find several posts with easy to follow instructions
Removing the HVAC head is a twenty minute job.

Second issue ... A/C light two blinks and nothing....
It usually means the R134a pressure is low.... IT could be a cheap fix buy a can and kit of R134a from your local Walmart and top it up....

BUT if the system has a major leak and is empty, then it needs to be evacuated to get the moisture out of the system before it is refilled.
You will also want to find the cause of the leak....
It again could be simple ... a loose fitting, a leaking hose, or something more costly a bad O ring on the compressor or the compressor itself could be shot.
I would take it to a local shop that specializes in A/C..... or a local mechanic you trust rather than the stealership
IF it is related to the compressor,
It will take about 2 hours to get the compressor out ( tight spaces mean the water pump, or rad, or exhaust manifold first have t come out
then either the repair or replacement ( a new one from an autoparts store ranges from $400-600 depending on the brand and the store)
I bought a used off a fellow forum member for under $200.
Finally the reinstallation.... another 2 hours and refilling.

If you had R134a left in the sytem the shop should give you a credit for it ( they recycle it) and you should only pay for the amount you need . A complete fill is less than 3 lbs @ ~35/lb. If they work on the compressor they will discard and you will need to replace the compressor oil. They will also likley recommend to put a dye in the system to help identify future leaks.

Thanks for all the help man....I didnt realize that the display was that easy to fix what does the exactly $40 get me?

Also what exactly is R134a and how much does a kit cost to put in my car from Walmart? Where do I even pour it in? Also if thats not the problem can I mess anything up by putting R134a in my car?

Thanks again...your post was very informative.

It could also be something as plain and simple as a failed outside ambient air sensor. Located on the lower passenger side of the radiator shroud. They are not known for their longevity and the connectors easily corrode.

When it fails you will get the same problem with the A/C light blinking and then going off. Much easier to repair than going through the ordeal with the rest of the A/C system.

Whats the best way to determine what the problem is w/o paying out the nose?
