I have been trying to get my wheels balanced properly but keep having troubles and would like to have your imput please.
1. The first time I had them balanced they used the clip style weights that you pound on with a hammer. Well after a few weeks one weight fell off one wheel and another weight had come halfway off another so they were all screwed up.
2. The second time they decided to used the weights with the sticky backside (double sided tape) but after a couple of washes the water has softened the glue and I'm starting to lose some weights again.
Can anybody please suggest a way to keep these weights on my wheel so I can keep a proper balance????
Seriously though, I hope its not the corner gas station. I prefer the sticky weights and with a "clean" rim they should stick well. You didn`t spray commercial wheel cleaner on your rims and overspray the weights that might soften the glue.
The adhesives are so much better than they used to be on stick-on weights, I have never had one come off if it was put on correctly. The surface has to be clean, and it helps if the application temperature is not too cold.
No its not the corner slob doing the work its a reputable company in my area...if I go back and have them do the sticky weights again, what would you suggest I first clean the wheels with ???
Thank you.
I`m not sure what to use but the shop should at least clean the area where the weights are going. If you want to clean them you`ll have to clean the whole wheel cuz you don`t know where the weights will be needed meaning stripping any wax or protective off. I live near mallot corvettes and they do mine, very professional work but still I don`t know what they used to clean it, sorry
In the past I have had stick on weights with no problems. Used LPS degreaser to clean area where weights would go. The LPS flashes off. Read can before using. Whatever is used, you want to make sure it doesn't break the protective coating on the wheel. When clip on weights are used, I tell them to put on backside of wheel and they've held. If they use clip ons, be sure they use the plastic coated ones. Some places still use uncoated lead and they will definitely corrode a spot on the wheel, over time.

If you have a clean wheel with no wax, the stick on weights should hold. I've used a little rubbing alcohol on my wheels and it takes the wax off. I then went over the area with some mild soap and water.
