First of all I'd like to thank cbx1047cc for the awesome engine shot. I hope he doesn't mind me using his picture.
So while installing my headers this past weekend I broke the little black plastic piece coming off the unit pictured below. I need to buy a replacement but I don't know what it's called or what it does. Thanks!
Your water temp sensor. Knock sensors are under the valley cover. No biggie go to the dealership shell out $50 im sure and chalk it up.
Doh! I was between water temp sending unit or knock sensor. Went with knock sensor because on my last car the water temp was on the back of the thermostat housing. It was a rotary engine and thats pretty much exactly where the knock sensor was
Coolant temp sender, as several here have already indicated. I broke the plastice connector piece in one of my many forays into taking the heads off. The replacement was only about 13 bucks, if I remember correctly. Be aware that you will have coolant pouring out when you pull it to replace it. Also, use thread sealant paste - not tape - if it doesn't already come with the paste pre-applied.

No, I don't mind you using the picture. The funny part is, I broke that coolant sensor as well. That's a strange coincidence.
