Default 2001 vs 2002 Z06. *seriously*

I'm ... can't believe I'm going to say this.... looking at trading in the mach 1 for a z06 corvette. I've always had a sweet spot for them, and well it's a better base to start from then the mach 1, for future mods.

Now I did a search on here, and I didn't see a direct comparision.

2001 z06 vs 2002 z06

The only difference I'm aware of is the hp ratings. Can someone explain the differences and why the hp is different? I ask this because I'm pricing the two cars out right now..and I tend to find the 01 z06 about 4-6 grand cheaper than the 02, even when they have about the same miles. What problems or TSB's are expected of these cars, and what is a good price?

Thanks for all your help and input.

Josh

You'll feel much better when you shed about 400 pounds and gain balance and handling.

But yeah, do a search... it's been covered to death. A lot of improvements on the '02, namely the power, shocks, HUD, and the oil consumption problem that plagued a few '01's was fixed.

I went from a '97 Cobra to the Z06... you'll never look back. Please do a search... our fingers get tired from typing out the differences. They are minor and can be easily modded away.

Thanks again guys.

Josh, it's the cam

the 2001 has the better Alcoa rims(sharper edges, rarity)
no sodium filled valves

color choices, only year for speedway white

you can add the hud for about $300(takes about 2 hours)

If you're planning bolt-on mods, hold out for the 2002, even if you have to wait a little longer to come up with the extra cash. There's a reason the 2001s are less - they're less desirable. You'll always regret it if you save a few bucks. However, if you're planning serious mods that involve major motor work, you may want to save the money by getting the 01 and you'll have an extra $4 grand for go-fast parts.

Yeah, I think I'm going to hold out for a 2002.

I only plan on doing bolt on mods.

Yep 2001's suck... I mean when they make 384 rwhp on the same dyno on the same day that your buddies bolt-on '04 makes 383 (Mike I love you, and we know it was my flywheel that made up for your '04 cam)

See dyno graph in my sig =) With my mods the only components that are still different are the cam itself and the lighweight valves. I have an vortex rammer intake w/ air-bridge, MAF screen removed, Kooks 1 3/4ths TL headers w/ cats and a Borla Stinger catback.

The main issue with the '01's is excessive oil consumption... I had mine re-ringed and now it's fully fixed, I also run 0w40 oil so it does not burn any between 6000 mile changes.

If you can find a re-ringed '01 don't look it over... they're great cars.

This really sums up my question as well. In addition to the cam, the 01 has 4 cats and a more restrictive air intake (or so I've been told), so if you are going Vararam and headers - the difference is only the cam. With a good tune, it sounds like the '01 will be pretty close with the same bolt ons as an '02+ - correct?

Correct. Typically, an '02+ will run about 2 tenths quicker and 2 MPH more through the quarter stock. Can anyone really feel 2 tenths when you're talking a car that runs low 12's? A buddy of mine has an '01 and his car felt every bit as quick as my '02 and my yellow '04. His best was a 12.5 at 114, my best in my '04 was 12.2 at 118. I pulled him at the track, but driving on the street, they very similar.

Then again, I've seen guys in '02+ Z06's make 20 passes and never break into the 12's. Hell, some of 'em were in the 14's for the better part of the day.

We all know what they say about opinions, so here is mine. Yes to some the 01 Z is the redheaded stepchild. When they came out they took the auto world by storm(like the 06 Z06) but the early oil use issue was a set back and the B.S. that came with it. But Chevy still sold 5,773 Z06 in 2001. Next big problem was the hp 385 for 01, not bad not many complaining. But for 2002 now its 405! IMHO don't be put off by the 01, we all know they get better every year in some way! Love my 01, truth be told, plenty of car! lockz

Get the 02. I would not sell my "perfect" < 10k mile one for less than $38k.

umm....ok?? You are right though...you WOULDN'T sell it for $38k, lol.

Anyhow, ViperblueCobra,
If money isnt that much of an object than sure get an 02, what the heck. But for $4k+ difference an 01 is the better value.

PS-I have had em all, mustang and Fbod's and the although I still love both the mustangs and fbod's (namely built Cobra's, built Saleens & WS6's) the Z06 is a totally different driving experience...its in another league. Wait until you feel the balance of the car and how light, nimble and manueverable it feels and how well it brakes too, and how comfortable it is and how cool it feels to drive...you'll see. Don't get me wrong...like i said I love the pony cars too, but its apples and oranges. Basically mustang's and TA's are great fun muscle cars while a Z06 is a world class sports car. They each have their place. If I could afford it, I'd have one of each Sorry...it appears I went off on a tangeant there.

Welcome, Viperblue. I too came from the Mustang ranks (01 MG Cobra coupe), and would advise getting the 02. Some guys really like the HUD, and the other differences are not cosmetic, but I wouldn't call them minor, either. Modding Corvettes is WAY more $$$ than Mustangs, but also more rewarding. After all, it is a Corvette.

PS...love the Machs. Wish I'd have gotten one of those instead of the Cobra, but they weren't out yet.

Just read the first page of the FAQ stuck at the top, it explains the difference in detail, I'm surprised you regulars don't know this already.
