installed hurst shifter

I installed my new Hurst Shifter this past Saturday, the question I have is why is the shifter so stiff? Is that normal?

It was to stiff for me as well. I put in the lightest springs and now it's great (except for the rattle at higher RPM's).

Yep, after market shifters are typically stiffer and tend to loosen some with use.

Make sure you have the lightest springs in.

I put in the lightest springs and the side to side tension was perfect... Damn thing rattles like crazy at high RPM's so I've opted to change it out for the C6 Z06 shifter!

There was a thread about shifter rattle some time ago. The answer is to put a hole in a rubber pipe cap or half of tennis ball and put the shifter through it. Then cover it with the boot. I did this with my Hurst install and it works great. Find the thread.
