What breaks first on these cars? I've heard of axle(one side) and trans problems. I read the sticky and my eyes are burning. Any help would be great
At stock and near-stock power levels, the C5Z06 is essentially bulletproof, assuming it is driven by a skilled driver who doesn't miss shifts and trash the tranny. The rear is very hard to break except through technique errors on launch involving sticky surfaces.
The clutch is a wear part whose life depends on quantity and technique of launches and consistency in maintaining fresh fluid in the hydraulics.
My 2002 is well maintained (oil/filter, clutch-differential-tranny fluids) and pretty well driven. I've replaced a clutch but had zero mechanical issues.
With all that said, if you are in the market for a used Z06, be very careful to be satisfied with the maintenance history of the car. Buying one off a dealer's lot entails more risk than from a private owner whom you can quiz and size up. Also insist on a car with an original or extended warranty.

Well said and I second what everyone else said about your wallet being a little thinner. This car was designed to be modded. Just try and not mod it? I dare you

I just bought one this past Thursday thats why I ask. GM Warranty So it will be driven hard. My last car was an LS1 F-body that had several weak links. The F-body was a beast at 385rwhp this Z06 is like a scalpel.
whats the big deal with the stripes? Isn't that a Z16? That means the stripes are stock, right? I admit, i wassent a fan at first, but they have grown on me.. I just want ANY Z06 lol.

but really, they can be removed pretty easy?
It's an 02. The stripes are aftermarket. Hey Beaker, don't try to sway the vote with your hair dryer comments Should they stay or should they go? I may just keep them out of spite.
My opinion is the clutch is the weak link. It will hold fine, the pedal just wants to stick on the floor after a hard run. Next up is the valvesprings. Mine along with others let go at an idle with no warning. Dont worry though, the general replaced the two. They all went in the garbage, the clutch will be in the trash soon also. Otherwise its a nice performing car.
