don't overfill
If when the oil was last changed the butt was slightly lifted and given time to really drain, then it would take a full 7 quarts (inclusive of pre-filling the oil filter if that was done too).
However, if not, then whatever it took to get it to full is all you should put in it for now (assuming your checking it after warmed up a bit and then sitting, engine off, for 5-10 minutes max).
However, if you are worried it might use some oil, during the trip, then seal the container up tight, maybe even in a zip-lock or two, and take it with you. Before you start the return trip (or after you get there), check the oil level and add whatever might be needed.
Asside of not overfilling, this way, you'll know if it uses oil or not...
Mine always takes 7, I let it drain for 10 min.... pre fill the filter with one of the 7 qts. and just pour the oil in, when empty, pour the next, I don't let it sit there5 minutes... and poof it is always at the full mark, after I start it up... bring up oil pressure, and then let it sit for 5 minutes. I never have to add oil between oil changes... around 5,000 miles or so.. so the 1200 miles should not be a problem.
