Default Car did not pass inspection?!

so I had off from work today so I decided to take the car for inspection. (2001 vert) Havent used it all winter, so the battery had been dead and I installed a new one. Everything was beautiful. Warmed it up, and drove it to the inspection center. I pass everything, (my car is mint with only 26k miles) and they say I failed cause my computer wont talk to thiers. Its says it is not ready? They then told me that if you disconnect or install a new battery, it takes at least 100 miles of driving for the computer to get c02 levels, etc..... is this true?? my cars check engine light has never come on, and it always runs amazing. Any ideas?? Thanx!

happened to me last year on my 2000 coupe....mine didn't pass emissions after being taken out from its winter sleep....you need to drive it a certain number of cycles (fast/slow speeds) to get the computer to reset itself...try that then have it inspected in about a week and you should be OK.

The OBD II-I/M (Inspection and Maintenence) monitors can take many miles to set. This can happen after a bettery change AND if you clear and Computer Codes. These monitors scan things like EGR, Heated O2 sensors, Gas Vapor Purge, etc. The only run under very specific loads/speeds and braking conditions.

As previously mentioned, anytime you disconnect the battery or clear codes, you will reset you readiness monitor, and until the readiness test's are passed you will fail an emission test.

in order to pass the readiness test's you must complete a "drive cycle"

A complete driving cycle will perform diagnostics on all systems and can be done in under fifteen minutes.

To perform an OBDII Driving cycle do the following:

Cold Start. In order to be classified as a cold start the engine coolant temperature must be below 50°C (122°F) and within 6°C (11°F) of the ambient air temperature at startup. Do not leave the key on prior to the cold start or the heated oxygen sensor diagnostic may not run.

Idle. The engine must be run for two and a half minutes with the air conditioner on and rear defroster on. The more electrical load you can apply the better. This will test the O2 heater, Passive Air, Purge "No Flow", Misfire and if closed loop is achieved, Fuel Trim.

Accelerate. Turn off the air conditioner and all the other loads and apply half throttle until 88km/hr (55mph) is reached. During this time the Misfire, Fuel Trim, and Purge Flow diagnostics will be performed.

Hold Steady Speed. Hold a steady speed of 88km/hr (55mph) for 3 minutes. During this time the O2 response, air Intrusive, EGR, Purge, Misfire, and Fuel Trim diagnostics will be performed.

Decelerate. Let off the accelerator pedal. Do not shift, touch the brake or clutch. It is important to let the vehicle coast along gradually slowing down to 32km/hr (20 mph). During this time the EGR, Purge and Fuel Trim diagnostics will be performed.

Accelerate. Accelerate at 3/4 throttle until 88-96 km/hr (55-60mph). This will perform the same diagnostics as in step 3.

Hold Steady Speed. Hold a steady speed of 88km/hr (55mph) for five minutes. During this time, in addition to the diagnostics performed in step 4, the catalyst monitor diagnostics will be performed. If the catalyst is marginal or the battery has been disconnected, it may take 5 complete driving cycles to determine the state of the catalyst.

Decelerate. This will perform the same diagnostics as in step 5. Again, don't press the clutch or brakes or shift gears.

hope this helps

I'm going to Florida for a week. I'll put some miles on it for you. No charge.

Another reason that I'm glad we don't have inspections here!

thanx guys for all the posts. you guys are right, the computer completely reset itself, i had to reprogram everything all over again. I guess I'll take it out off winter hibernation, find a good day, and just drive. Its just annoying that I have to take it back there, and have those random guys get into and outoff my car Thankyou everyone!!!!!

When I replaced my battery, it took overnight and a little driving for everything to reset, most obviously the radio.

Never knew this. Nice to know even though we don't have emissions inspections where I live.

Yes, this is very nice to know even though we don't have emissions testing in our area either.

It failed the drivability code test, See that the problem with vetters that don't place a trickel charge on the battery, but in NC it doesn't take a 100 miles to get drivability codes here they give us only 10 days a we can be reinspected. We just started in this county.

Currentman.......Great information on the "readyness test." I had no idea the car had to go thru all that stuff. Thanks very much for sharing.

Default Ken

I am having the same issue. Charged battery went to inspect and failed. They said 3 were not being read and told to drive 100 miles and return. Did that and now 6 are not reading. Don't know if this is part of problem but I put some techron in tank as my gas gauge was not reading once it got to 1/2 tank. Any idea if that is part of problem?
