Hi madman -
I cut the mufflers off of my wifes 99 coupe and welded on straight pipes and some resonator tips.
The sound is mellow and authoritative. Remember, the system still has 4 catalytic converters, so it is not like a full straight-pipe exhaust.

I sounds great in person - I was doing a couple of revs for friends at the Funfest - and one guy walking by said "all these expensive exhausts and this one sounds better than all of them!"
I even tried to put a Z06 Ti setup on the car for the wife when I ran across one reasonably priced....but she wanted to stay with her "offroad" setup!
