Default 2.73 or 3.15?

A friend of mine is looking at purchasing a particular '98 A4 C5 coupe. The current owner doesn't know if it has 2.73s or 3.15s. Is there a way to tell without driving it, like by using the VIN or something?

I tried a search but didn't come up with anything, so sorry if this is a major repost.

Thanks,
Kris

Look for the code "G92" in the glove compartment. If you see that then it has the performance gear ratio axle (3.15).

Look at the options sticker on the glove compartment door.

GU2 is 2.73 and G92 is 3.15.

Not sure if in 98 it will show GU2 (I know it does in later years), but if it has the performance axle it will show G92.

Since it's a 98, isn't the code list in the trunk???

BTW if it is a 2.73, he likes the car, & it is a good deal...there are plenty of used 3.15's around...he can always upgrade.

If you can't find the codes take it out on the highway if you are doing 73 mph at 2000 rpm then you have 2:73 gears

My 98 is 3.15 and I found the code on one of the side compartment lids in the back.

If ya can't find the info on the car and you're able to take it for a drive, a 3.15 gear will run approx 1950 RPM at 70 mph while in drive (4th gear). A 2.73 will run about 300 RPM less using the same guidelines as above. Good luck.

Thanks for the help. I will have him call the owner and ask about the G92 code in the glovebox.

It's a very nice silver coupe, 73k miles on it, it has Bose and a clear roof, new tires, it's all stock, etc. Does $18,500 sound like a reasonable deal?
