Default Rear tint removal

Okay, getting the tint off the side windows was relatively easy. Now I'm looking at the rear window.

It would seem the tinter decided to just paint over the dot matrix stuff.

I know it's going to be tough without knowing what material was used, but any suggestions how (or if) this stuff can be removed?

If it's paint it won't be easy to remove. I'd maybe lay a tarp down to cover everything, then try some type of paint remover.
Maybe someone with more knowledge will chime in.
Good luck.

Why are you taking the tint off? You will probably destroy the rear defrosters if you pull it off, and tring to remove the painted area wil probably destroy the dot matrix

To answer your question, because it's too dark. I can barely see out of the car at night, and that makes it dangerous in my opinion.

As to the rest of your post, that's why I'm asking for suggestions on HOW to do it, not IF I should do it.

The center part of the tint is a film. How would pulling that off destroy the rear defroster? Unless you are suggesting its bound to the defroster wires and pulling the film off is going to take the wires with it. That seems like an unlikely scenario though, particularly if I take my time and warm the film to loosen the glue as I go.

Take it to a tint shop pay them to do it. They spray a chemical on it and let it sweat. Then it comes off like butter.

Thanks. I stopped by a couple of tint shops already and they both kind of grimaced when they looked at it and indicated they didn't want to touch it. I'll check in the Yellow Pages and call a few more to see if I can find one that'll do it.

The glass shop that did my tinting had a technique to apply something to the tint, let the car sit in the sun for several hours and the tint just pulled right off.

Check in the yellow pages for a glass shop that does tinting, and they won't have any issue at all. You'll pay, but they'll be able to do it for you.

Are you certain it's not film?

Mine was almost flawless..but it ended up being just film. It wasn't easy to get off...but a little patience and time it came off...no damage done. It did leave a little residue from the glue, but with glass cleaner and time it's coming off now

Slowly peel the tint off, then use Goo Gone and steel wool to get the adhesive off the glass. Go side to side, along the defrost lines. Can't help you with the paint.

removing the window film on back glasses is always more tedious. yes, the defroster wires can be damaged, many tint shops wont remove tint unless its something they did and is warranteed and they are redoing simply because if u ruin a defroster grid its gonna cost big bucks to get it replaced. but i have seen people do this and if im not mistaken its something like spraying the entire surface with a soapy solution and then placing a plastic garbage bag up to it and smoothin it out against the film, this traps that water in it, close the car, let it sit in the sun, and somehow the miracle god waves her hand and the stuff is easier to remove. DO NOT use a razor blade on the back glass. thats the number one thing that ruins a defroster grid....

Most tint shops use a steamer that heats up the tint so that it comes off easier. Then they spray some mean green onto the window and let it sit for a minute. Then they take some steel wool and scrub all of the glue off.
