Default 2001 MAS Screen Removed

Having upgraded the intake via Blackwing and long tube/high flow cats on the exhaust of my 01 ZO6 I just couldn't resist removing the MAS Screen. In hind site I'm now aware the "screen" is actually a device to remove air turbulance prior to the sensor interpreting the air flow. Although the car seems to run OK I'm curious if I made a mistake and perhaps need to consider one of the aftermarket MAS high performance units which, I beleive, doesn't require the afore mentioned screen. Any comments appreciated! Ed

i noticed a slight drop in gas mileage and a rougher idle when I took my MAF screen out of my 2001 Z06. I am going to be getting HP tuners soon so I am sure I can fix those 2 issues with a little tuning.

I pulled mine out just prior to getting dyno-tuned. The screen is there to straighten out the air flow so the MAF can get a more accurate reading. However, it's there because that same MAF unit is used in other GM vehicles with curvey intake tracts. On the Z06 the air intake lid has a hole in the center so the air allready has a nice straight path and the screen is not needed. However, on the LS2 in the C6 it air comes from the sides of the box and they went back to the screen. Also, some say that since the TB is smaller than the MAF the screen isn't a restriction at all. But, like you while I was tuning everything up getting ready for my dyno tun I couldn't resist pulling it out... but I did have it all tuned for.

Cobra4B has it right, at least from what I have read. You should not have any problem with the screen removed with the Blackwing. That said, I would hesitate to install one of the dual filter intakes with right and left filters (unless you plan to leave the screen in) since that arrangement could cause turbulence at the MAFS.

From what I know, there are no gains with aftermarket MAFS for the 2001-04 models. For the 1997-00 years it's possible to get 4-5 rwhp by going with a poly MAFS, the best I have found is the one made by MTI Racing, Marieta GA but there may be others out there.

The difference in the size of the MAFS and the TB have nothing to do with removing the screen. The amount of air flow past the heated wires in the MAFS is what matters and by removing the screen you have increased the flow across the wires.

You have made enough changes in air flow that a tune would be worthwhile to dial in the A/F ratio.

I am not a tuner, these are just my own experiences. Hope this helps.

There is no problem with removing the screen. GM removed it on newer Z06's, there is none on my stock MAF. It is of no benefit on Z06 intakes other than being a restriction. Also, don't waste your money on aftermarket MAF's, especially if you are considering a Granatelli. They are a waste of money and can cause problems you don't have now.

I don't know about the Vettes, but in LS1 F-bodies, removing the screen can make your car run lean.
